The compressor was not staring and making an buzzing noise. I replaced the start relay and over heat sensor and it purred like a kitten for about 12 hours and now the buzzing is back. I'm attempting to be 100% sure it's not the compressor and was told to also check the defrost timer. I ohm tested the compressor and it reads good numbers across the three pins.
If the fridge doesn't go into defrost then there WILL be a problem..
Without defrosting, the fridge will working for up to 1 week before the fresh food section gets warm but there will be a problem for sure. So short answer "no it's not possible".
Your problem could be that the relay is ok but the compressor is too hot..in that case the overload protector will prevent the compressor from running and you might here the clicking and buzzing.
So, compressor is bad for sure?
not necessarily, if the condenser coils are dirty or consenser fan is not running it can cause the compressor to overheat
if the compressor feels cold and it still can't start then yes you have a compressor problem...last thing you could do is to use a 3 in 1 or hard start instead which replaces the relay, overload protector/capacitor. And if that doesn't work then the compressor needs to be replaced.
Okay. Coils clean, fan runs and compressor get hot (normal). New relay and sensor keep it purring for about 12 hours. Fridg is cold as needed then buzz click buzz click. No cooling. Ordered the 3in1 and will try that. Just worried about the heat overload. Does the 3in1 come witha built in heat sensor to shut things off if the compressor get overloaded?
yes it does, it's called 3 in 1 because it replaces the relay/capacitor/overload protector
but there is another concern you should have ..which is ....
If the compressor is pulling over 400 watts, it should be replaced. Installing a hard start kit at
this high a voltage current draw will allow bothe the wiring in the product and the new hard start kit to overheat
Many thanks. I'm waiting for the 3in1 to arrive and will put it in. I'll meter one of the two (not common) leads going to the compressor. I've rad that 1.5 amps are normal. At what reading (amps) should I consider it a bust?
if the whole fridge (while compressor is running) draws more than 2.5 it will start getting dangerous. After the 3 in 1 installed i would once in a while check the wiring and the hard start to see if it's overheating.
ihsanerden - you have been a tremendous help. I thank you Sir. I will keep you posted (If you wish) - Jeff ----
3in1 Hard starter installed last night. So far so good after 24 hrs. I'll check the draw as soon as I can determine how to check amps.
I'm glad I could be of help..yes keep me posted pls...you can buy Kill-a Watt device which shows you the watt/amps/voltage...neat little gadget..try Amazon or I think I saw it at Home Depot also.
Almost a week running great! I will look for the Kill-A-Watt device. Looks like a simple device and I need something new since my volt meter snap jaw broke.
