PLEASE HELP! It's after 3a.m. I don't want the window up... I don't want the air on (b/c it doesn't really blow in this bedroom) and I DO WANT TO SLEEP! But the fan will be nice and relatively quiet and then all these SCRAPING and SCREECHING noises start emitting from it--then they stop.
Someone mentioned ball bearings to me.. Anyone else have this problem? Probably not-- and you're probably sleeping.
AYE YI YI!
The problem most likely lies within the fan motor of your Lasko unit. I just got fed up with my Lasko tower fan (model 2515) making a rumbling noise on and off and so I took apart the entire thing. I found the noise to be coming from the Decomin 2033014 motor in the unit. Took apart the motor and found that it is so cheap that it doesn't even have bearings! Just a few plastic discs on a spindle. I tried greasing the discs again but it didn't work. The only solution is to get a new motor. I am really disappointed in the quality of these Lasko fans.
Rinse in shower under hot water. Let wat flow through vents from both sides to remove all dust buildup. Do not get control center wet. Shake excess water and should work better now.
Brand new Lasco tower fan was making a rattling noice in low speed.
I sprayed some WD-40 spray into the bottom of the tower, through the grill, on to the metal shaft of the motor. You may need a flashlight to see it.
This fixed the rattling immediately.
Now it is whisper quiet.
You can try removing the motor and seeing if it spins freely. If it doesn't then you should try oiling the shaft. There should be some little holes that you can try to squirt the oil in. I'm not an expert but I've been told you don't have to worry about adding too much. Just wipe the excess of. If you can get oil on the bushings or bearings in base and where the shaft exits the motor, it should start spinning easier and easier. That will likely solve the noise problem and also prevent the motor from burning out.
I have had the 42-inch unit and it starting making rattling noises after about a month. I could no longer return it so I decided to take it apart and see what was wrong. Turns out it was a broken mount that the fan shroud was attached to. You will need to remove the blades in order to take the shroud off; It is held on by 4 screws. On my fan, it was the top post that was broken off. I used super glue and let it fully cure before reassembly. While your at it, you might as well put some grease on the metal post of the fan blade. After doing this I had no more rattles, but it could happen again due to poor design.
Ok, so it turns out that wasn't the entire problem, but on part of it. After about a day or so the rattle started again. So I once again took the fan apart and found that the top metal bracket that the fan blade unit is held in place and allowed to rotate is the issue. If you push the bracket up or down the rattling will stop, but will return after a few hours. I will be looking for a new tower fan after all of this hassle.
