SOURCE: Whirlpool Washer leaves lint & white smears on the cleaned cloth

If you experience a problem where the washer does not drain properly or the drain pump makes excessive noise, here’s the information you need to check the drain pump:

Symptom: PUMP IS RUNNING, BUT NOT DRAINING PROPERLY.

1. Unplug the washer while servicing inside the unit.
2. Remove the lower kick panel under the door by removing the three 7mm screws under the bottom edge of the panel. HINT: Use a couple of blocks of wood to prop up the front feet of the washer to gain better access to the screws. Once the screws are removed the panel should drop down, and then pull off. If the panel becomes stuck, a slight tap on either side will dislodge it.
3. Locate the drain pump. It will be located directly under the wash tub (it is the only pump this washer has).
4. There is an access removal cover on the pump that can be removed to clean out the trap. BEFORE doing this, it is strongly recommended that you remove all residual water from the wash tub & drain line or you will have about a gallon or so inside your washer and on the floor to clean up.
5. Here’s a helpful way of quickly removing the residual water. If you own a wet/dry shop vac, remove the drain hose from the standpipe at the wall and pull a vacuum with the shop vac. This will empty the wash tub, pump and drain lines. If you don’t own a shop vac, grab a bunch of old towels and open the access on the pump slowly so that it comes out at a trickle. Allow the towels to soak up the majority of the water. Close the access and stop the water if you need to get additional towels.
6. Open the pump access and remove once you have all the water drained. Check the drain pump for foreign objects and debris. Check the pump impeller and make sure there’s nothing caught in it. Items as small as toothpicks or cotton swabs have been known to stop this pump from working.
7. Clean out the pump thoroughly and reinstall the access cover. Make sure the cover is snug, but do not over tighten.
8. Place the drain hose back in the standpipe (IMPORTANT – DO NOT FORGET!).
9. With the bottom panel still off, plug the washer back in and select the following on the operator console – DRAIN SPIN, NO SPIN, and then press any button under OPTIONS 4 times (it must be the same button). “C00” will show on the console display as the washer begins diagnostics mode.
10. Check the drain pump for leaks as the washer fills. The pump is gravity filled and will hold water even it is not pumping. Allow washer to run through diagnostics until it begins the wash tub tumble cycle.
11. At this point, you can stop the diagnostics procedure by pressing PAUSE/CANCEL 2 times. The drain pump energizes and the washer will begin to drain.
12. If the drain pump works normal and there are no leaks detected, reinstall the bottom panel and tighten screws.

NOTE: It is normal to have residual water left inside the wash tub under the wash basket. This is why it is important to leave the door ajar when not in use so this water does not become sour.

Clothes have lint on them when the washing cycle is finished is there a lint area i need to clean

The newer Whirlpool top-loaders have lint screens on the inner tub and not accessible. These are supposed to self-clean during the drain cycle. I've heard that liquid fabric softener and detergent build-up may clog the screens when lint sticks to the gooey screens. Try something that will cut the goo like vinegar or ammonia in a small load level without clothes. Without clothes in the washer, that is.

Older Whirlpool washers have lint filters located above the tub, on the lid opening.

Good luck from Detroit, MI.

We have a Whirlpool top loading washing machine that leaves the clothes covered with lint after each load. Delicate clothes that have elastic bands are covered with pieces of lint on the bands that are...

Your service man is right, the lint is filtered through the filter plugs on the bottom of the tub, and backflushed out during the spin cycle. This does not do a great job of filtering out the lint that came out of the clothes. So why is there so much lint? Three reasons: 1. Clothes being beaten against the agitator, tub, each other. The Whirlpool washer has a pretty decent way of agitating the clothes without too much damage, as long as there is plenty of water for the clothes to move through. As long as you make sure your load size and water level are correct, this shouldn't cause a lot of lint. I always have a larger water level than the load size calls for. 2. Lower quality material in the clothes. We definitely see this a lot, especially in the cheaper towels, rugs, sweaters, ect. Some of these have such cheaply made fibers, that they put out a lot of lint. 3. Laundry soaps. Most soaps are very caustic detergents and eat the fibers right out of the linens. There are some brands of washers that still use a type of metal in them that this soap eats right up, so in a few years the machine is junk. All of the washer manufacturers went to plastic outer tubs, as the soap was literally eating holes in the outer tubs in 2 to 3 years on some brands. This is one of the reasons we have so much of the micro lint that is so fine, it goes right through your dryer lint filter and causes lint build up in the venting itself. Years ago, at our shop in Hawaii, we tested naturopathic soaps for 12 years before we settled on the Melaleuca brand for our laundry soaps. Ph neutral, cleans the clothes better than any brand we have tested before or since, does not leave the sludge in the outer tub that most brands do, does not leave a hard aggregate in the tubs like some other brands do, is cheap and does not cause the allergys, athsma, skin rashes, ect. that most of the caustic brands are doing. We have used it for over 10 years now and see very little lint in our Whirlpool washer. Look it up online, join it, and buy the soap directly from the company. It sounds like you have done everything else correctly to the washer, that you could have. I am impressed, most people could not have done what you did. Hope this helps. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

Why does my washing machine leave lint on my clothes? does this type of washer have a lint catcher?

Most washers don't have lint traps, the dryers are expected to. In your type of top loader some simple traps would be located in the top cap of the agitator. They should be cleaned each load, but they only stop the bigger pieces.

GE top load washer w/no lint trap leaves excessive lint

Most US-sold washers made after the mid 1980s don't have lint filters. The manufacturers weasel-word around it by saying that the lint "goes down the drain", leading people to optimistically assume that there is a self-cleaning filter in there somewhere. There usually isn't and whatever lint doesn't go down the drain is filtered by your cloths (but whatever does might clog your septic system). As a result of this scam, it's much harder to hang-dry or iron-dry clothes that haven't been hand washed. And, if you think spending $2000 on a pair of matched "front-load" style machines will solve this, you might be wrong; many of those washers still have no lint filter.

Excessive lint on clothes and smell

There is many solutions that work some. The best analogy I have seen is to reduce the wash time as the newer soaps are more efficient at removing dirt which also softens the fabric. Any excess in soap regardless of type in combination with water type will cause an odor, why is the contaminents in the water plus the junk on are clothes to be polite. It builds up under the basket and along the top water line in the tub plus creates a film from the tub through the hoses, pump and house drain. Lint is a product of excess washing and too much soap. Whirlpool stated for there front loaders no more than two TBL of liquid soap which is like 3/8 cup max for the old top loader. SearsTechToo
