TORO LAWNMOWER.
I posted a question yesterday (6th July) concerning a problem with the rear wheel drive mechanism on a Toro 22in recycler lawn mower. There is a lot of gear noise when I try to engage drive. I apologize for not mentioning that the mower has a PERSONAL PACE DRIVE sysetm and this may be where the trouble is. Adjusting the cable makes no difference. At present I can only use the mower by manually pushing it.
Model numbers 20075, 20076 and 20076A
I would appreciate any help on how to fix this.
Brian.
Problem is in the rear pinion gears on rear axle and the design of the axle itself. I have a 2005 model 20041 had the same problem. I found a Toro dealer that had the fix.The problem is creadted by the fact that there is too much "play" in the rear axle. You have to limit that play by installing shims, or washers First, but the 2 new rear pinion gears for the rear axle. While you're at it, you may as well buy 2 new rear wheels because the "grinding" has worn the sprockets on the reas r wheels.Next, get 2 "fender washers", 1/2" ID and about 1" OD. I found it easier to turn the mower over and set it on saw horses to work on it.( drain the gas and oil first). Remove both rear wheels, pinion gears and all the washers etc. (caution - keep all parts from one side together - do not pile all parts together - keep them seperated by wheel - the reason is I believe there is one more washer/shim on the right side than on the left). Now to put everything back together, find a spot on the axle where the washer will fit in between the standard stuff.Install new pinion gears and replace the rest of the washers/shims just as they came off. INstall new wheels and you'll be good as new!
This was the issue with mine. When I popped off the wheels all the gears were in great shape but there was tons of play in the axle that was causing the gears to slip. I put an extra washer on the right side (the grinding noise was on the right) and the noise moved to the left side! So I put another slightly thinner washer on the left and the noise stopped. (I did NOT drain the mower and turn it over-- just set it up on a 6X6 hunk of wood so I could remove the wheels easily.)

Sounds like the transmission engagment lever is broken or cracked. if you can reach the lever see if it has play when the cable is tight. you will need two people one to hold the lever and one to check the lever. easiest way is to invert the mower and have someone hold the lever on the handle. do not try this wioth mower running. the lever should be tight with the transmission lever engaged.another note here the clutch lever will not feel solid but kinda spongy. usually caused by overtightening the cable.
