The RG950 has a 2 cycle engine and requires both fuel and 2 cycle oil be premixed and then poured into fuel tank.

If you use straight unleaded fuel without mixing 2 cycle oil at the proper ratio it will ruin the engine.

• 2-Stroke air-cooled engine.
• Fuel and oil mixture of 50:1 (unleaded petrol: 2-stroke lubrication).

My recommendation for you is use an "all fuel" 2 cycle mix such as Opti or other that includes fuel stabilizer to reduce carburetor fouling.

SOURCE: Just won't start

check the spark plug after a failed attempt to start. If dry, then no fuel is entering engine.
Did you leave old fuel in carb? if so, your carb probably is dirty: old gasoline deposits varnish, gum, and you will need to dissassemble carb and clean it.

SOURCE: My troy-Bilt 5550 watt generator will not start

First drain the fuel bowl. Any old fuel in there will keep it from starting. Fuel stabilizer is not what it's it cracked up to be. I've worked for 6yrs at a rental yard and had no luck with any fuel stabilizer, the fuel still went bad. If after you drain the fuel bowl it still will not start, you will need to clean the carb. Remove the carb and spray carb cleaner through all the accessible passages. If this does not do it, you will need to replace the carb. For long term storage I highly recommend draining all the fuel and filling just the carb with fuel stabilizer to keep gaskets moist. Then drain the carb when you take it out of storage.

Hello ghb. Continue with the starter fluid. It sometimes takes 2 or 3 minutes to clear the carbeurator. IF after that, it still won't take off then you will have to rebuild the carbeurator. Joe

How strong is the spark at the plug on a Ryobi CG 950 generator? I do have spark but it seems to be very weak and the generator does not start.

When in doubt, clean or replace the plug first. Then, if I get spark of any kind, I'll call it good for now and verify three other things. 1) pull the spark plug, ground the plug wire and turn the engine over to verify compression. Put your thumb over the hole and you'll feel it. 2) fuel - is it fresh and clean? not more than 6 months old with no water, and a clean filter. 3) Be sure you have clean and unrestricted air filter and passageways. If it all looks good, start looking at electrical wiring back to the magneto (things that might drain current to the plug). Keep in mind that a slight nick in a flywheel key can affect timing enough to keep a small engine from running.

My Ryobi 3500 generator starts but will not run

I've found this vid helpful:

* check and clean out air filter.
* drain out old fuel from lines around on/off fuel valve.
* You may need to drain and force flush out fuel filter (I used the carborator cleaner to force out water in filter.)
* re-assemble fuel lines and clamp.
* pull out choke lever to full choke.
* Pull start cord (or start switch) several times to prime fuel line.
* Turn on switches to ready generator for start up.
* Try several times to start.
* If it won't start then spray in carborator cleaner or Generator start spay into the air intake (with air filter sponge removed. Just a short burst is needed.
* Try starting again.
* Pull at least 3 times before spraying any additional cleaner to prevent flooding.
* If generator does not even turn over then there is a spark or ignition problem. Pull the spark plug to clean and check gap. (see your specs for recommended gap.)
* try spray starting method again.
* if your still having problems (with not turning over at all) then you will have to take it to a small engine shop or contact the vendor for service. Check your warranty.
* Once the generator has started. Keep it running till smooth operation. Adjusting the choke to normal open position may take a few minutes till the engine has time to warm up. Install air filter and close up all covers. Allow for a 5 min run and check by connecting a load to the electrical out put. (plug in a saw or other heavy duty power tool) The generator should adjust to the additional load.

Generator back firing from inlet manafold

Your symptoms are from running lean. Foam air filters put debris in carb jets. Check all the carb passageways and jets. Always start with a new plug.

Powermate 4000 with Briggs & Stratton motor (8hp) won't start. New spark plug, gas & fuel stabalizer added, oil added. What could be wrong?

Next step is to check that the magnet attached to the fly wheel is working properly. When you crank the generator over, put a multimeter on the leads to the magnet and look for a spike in the voltage. Be sure to get the polarity correct or you will damage your multimeter. If there isn't a spike in the voltage, then either the magnet is bad or the fly wheel is damaged. In either case parts will have to be ordered and replaced. If there is a spike in voltage, then it is time to check the fuel intake. Open up and take out the air filter. Inspect the air filter to make sure it is clean and doesn't have fuel or oil in it. If the air filter is we with either things, then this will prevent air from reaching the engine. This alone will cause it not to start. If the filter is clean, then leave it off and open up the throttle. This will give you direct access to the engine through the fuel intake. Put some fuel into a spray bottle, and when you crank over the engine spray some fuel into the hole where the air filter was. If the engine starts/sputters then you have a problem with your carburetor. If the engine doesn't start then you have a deeper issue that may require a trained mechanic to fix. Lets say that if the engine does start/sputter, then we need to take the carburetor off. Our goal is to clean the carburetor of any build-up and/or corrosion that has settled in the carburetor bowl. The carburetor is between the air filter assembly and the main engine block. When in doubt, trace the fuel line from the gas tank, and it will lead you to the carburetor. Next, grab the necessary tools and start by turning off the fuel and draining the carburetor. The fuel valve is typically inline with the fuel line. To drain the carburetor bowl loosen the screw on the bottom of the carburetor bowl. Once the last drop is out, then unbolt the carburetor from the engine block. With the carburetor off and parts labeled for easy re-assembly, you then have to remove the fuel bowl. This will either unscrew as a whole from the carburetor body, or have a central bolt that has to be removed. When removing the bowl, PLEASE be very careful and mindful of the fuel float and the filling pin. With the bowl safely off, inspect it for fuel build-up and rust/corrosion. If there is either in the bowl then this means you need to grab a fuel safe cup and an old toothbrush and carefully start cleaning the bowl and the surrounding parts. If you are comfortable with small parts at this point, then carefully remove the fuel float and the the filler pin underneath it. Please take note on how this dis-assembles to ease re-assembly. Clean these parts as well with the clean fuel and toothbrush. Assemble the parts back together once you are sure everything is clean and put the carburetor assembly back onto the engine block. Once everything is tightened down, it is time to turn the fuel back on at the valve on the fuel line. With the fuel back on, hit the prime button 3-5 times and crank the engine over. If the engine doesn't turn over at this point, then there is a much deeper mechanical issue that requires a trained mechanic to fix. Most mechanical fixes at this point are not worth your while and you may save money by purchasing a new engine/generator. Please let me know what you find during diagnosis, and I can provide more help.

It sounds like the engine is not getting enough fuel for it to run. First check that you have the fuel tap in the on position. If the fuel tap is on then the carby might be blocked or the needle & seat are not working properly. Turn the fuel tap off. Then take the fuel bowl off. You will then see a plastic float, turn fuel tap on. Fuel then should be flowing from carby. Push the float up and this should stop the fuel from running. Do this a couple of times to ensure that it is working correctly. If all is good after that then turn fuel tap off. Put fuel bowl back on, turn fuel tap on and test. If no luck, turn fuel tap off. Then you will need to take the carby off the motor and clean it using carby cleaner. Be sure to spray cleaner in all holes of carby and blow out carefully with air compressor. Put carby back onto motor and turn fuel tap on and test.

It's best to run all electronics through a UPS and surge protector. Small generators like the RG-950 are really for small power tools and lighting. The Ryobi RG-950 is only rated 650 watts which really means about 450 watts (70%) for continuous use. In general, a basic desktop or a laptop should be OK. A TV up to 25 inches and a 100w lamp, should be OK. If you try doing both at the same time, expect smoke followed by lights out. A UPS and Surge Protector are a must on small generators due to their poor voltage and frequency regulation. The UPS should be a good quality one that deals with Brownout, Overvoltage, and frequency deviation. ALWAYS USE A SURGE PROTECTOR!
