Remove the air filter, squirt a little fuel into the carb. Start and let run if it will for a few minutes. Could be you had some water in old fuel. and it is still in the intake of saw. If it still will not run after squirting some fuel into carb. You have a firing problem.

SOURCE: I Have a poulan brand chain saw that the bar oiler

Oil System Plugged:

  1. Remove the clutch cover, bar, and chain, clean the bar groove, any holes and passages on the rear of the bar (both sides, consider rotating the bar), if equipped with a sprocket nose ensure it rotates easily at least one complete revolution. Clean the saw oiler hole and channel. Insert a blunted, hooked piece of wire through the oil filler hole and pull the hose in the oil tank out. Pay attention to the screen or filter on the free end (clean or replace, difficult to determine serviceability). Start the saw and see if it oils when revved up (oozes down side of saw). If yes reassemble your saw. If no, continue with 2.
  2. Work your way through the linkage (use IPL to identify components and locations) cleaning and replacing any defective parts as you go. Carefully check the hoses for cracks especially at bends and connections. If equipped with an oil pump it is usually behind the clutch (clutch is a left handed thread). Please make extensive notes & some digital pictures will help during reassembly.
If it does not oil on completion of 1 it is most likely a bad oiler or worm gear (see IPL).

An example of a Poulan “PP220 Gas Chain Saw Type 5” IPL follows (may not be your saw):
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/PP220-Gas-Chain-Saw-Type-5/75.PP220-Gas-Chain-Saw-Type-5.1.59.1.html

The IPL (exploded parts list) for your saw is the only detail for the oil system and is sketchy at best. Oiler components and part numbers are listed but may be on different illustrations. They are also beneficial with disassembly/reassembly.

It has an outboard clutch use this and the IPL as a guide for removal. R² Drive Link Outboard Clutch by Drivelink.blogspot.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdqkIuVNUQc

  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).

If your saw is not a Type 7 an IPL for all Poulan chainsaws can be found here:

The dash number of your serial number is the type.

SOURCE: gas/oil ratio for fuel in a poulan pro 46cc engine

The standard mix for most chain saws is 40:1 that's about 3-1/4 oz per gallon.

How to start

Full choke until it tries to start, half choke until it does, and once it's running, open the choke fully and wait a few seconds for it to warm up before using it, as well as 15-20 seconds to let it cool down before shutting it off so as not to warp any metal parts of the engine

Weedeater dies when you open choke

After you start it and are in the second stage of the choke (half choke ) let it run for awhile until it warms a bit then try openning choke and going to full throttle.

I have a 2150 poulan that wont start. gets gas and spark plug fires

Read your manual cold start procedure carefully, especially the second note. IMO open the chock (not 1/2) once it tries to start and I think your problem will be solved. Try this start procedure I think it works better than the one in your manual.

Start Procedure
Cold:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4)
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull)
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed or 1/2.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull)
I am going to close this. If no better post back (below) and we will get into some trouble analysis. Yours is a better than normal question, Thank You

18"poulan chainsaw

Start at 1.5 CCW form lightly seated then tune for performance like this:
Carburetor Adjustment by Madsens.com
http://www.madsens1.com/saw%20carb%20tune.htm
CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.
Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.

There are 2 wav (sound - idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too.

I think your starting procedure may be the cause of flooding. Flooded is the #1 cause of hard starts in 2-cycle engines. Read carefully the recommended start in your manual. most miss the second note. It should be similar to this (read 3, read it again):
Warm start in the manual says 1/2 choke BS. Close choke, (sets fast idle) open choke, pull rope.
Start Procedure
Cold:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4).
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts (usually first pull).
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts (usually first pull).
If you still have trouble reply as you did before. I will get back to you. HTH

Poulan pro 46 cc 20 will not start, have had for 1 month, 3rd time I will use....any suggestions

Most starting problems with chainsaws are caused by flooding. Read and follow the start up procedure in your manual. Probably similar to this:
Start Procedure
Cold:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls)
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull)
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) - Don’t pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull)
All new saws regardless of maker are set to run extremely lean to meet EPA mandated air quality standards. They are also fitted with a device to restrict richening the carburetor beyond initial factory settings this too required by the EPA. Most big box stores put them on the shelf and sell them to the consumer with no thought of how elevation may impact saw performance or longevity. Homeowners usually aren't concerned about changes in the saws performance until it quits operating. This combination results in many destroyed saws and homeowner saws of most brands being called trash!
I don't know what the elevation where you are located is but I'll wager it is different than where the saw was set up. If my saw I'd visit a good (Stihl in my case) saw shop, and pay a couple of $ to have the carb adjusted (fresh fuel mix (1.5 months or less) 40:1 (3.2oz/1gal Husqvarna or Stihl 2 cycle oil) oil/fuel ratio, and the clean air filter). Any money spent is worth less than the aggravation when the saw won't start and you might spark a mutually beneficial relationship with a local merchant. HTH

Hartd to start when saw is warm

Are you choking it? You shouldn't be if hot. If no clean the air filter and try again. Are you setting the fast idle? You should be. Better? If your start procedure is similar to below and your fuel hoses have no cracks or holes the carburetor needs adjusting. A tune up might be a good idea. About $40 at your friendly neighborhood Stihl dealer (regardless of make). If taken in for tune up, get the oil/fuel ratio and use it until your next tune up (regardless of what manual says). HTH

Poulan 14 inch won't start

No. Try this first before you destroy it!!

First, check the fuel lines for cracks/breaks.

If they are o.k., then you will need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb. cleaner. Make sure the small screen in the carb. is free of debris. You should be able to see daylight through it.

Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152), to clean the small portals in carb. Reassemble and start.

(NOTE: If the cleaning doesn't work, then buy a carb. kit abd replace all appropriate parts.)

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

Check all bolts for tightness, especially the cylinder bolts. HOLD IT A SECOND did you add oil to the fuel?. If not you could damage engine very quickly. You have to have the proper mixture of oil and gas. Your owners manual should tell you the proper mixture.

Will not start - brand new

i bought a new dirtbike as a kid n same thing.it turned out ,it needed to be a synthedic oil in the mix.try seeing for spark to begin with by putting sparkplug in the wire n touching diode to the engine block while pulling the cord.thats a good starting point to diagnosing your problem.maybe try warming it up in the house then try starting it with no choke needed.the saws i ve used needed you to give it throttle after you pull,n no throttle with choke.
