Press the OPEN (flash) button.
This button is on the side of the camera just below the flash.
The flash mode button (lightning icon) is at the lower left on the rear of the camera.
This only changes settings when the flash is up.
This cycles through Auto, red-eye reduction, forced flash and no flash.
The mode shows in the finder or the LCD screen.
AUTO mode does not show.
The remote can be tested without the set either with a tester(shops use one) It also can be done in a DARK room with most digital cameras--point at camera and press buttons and look for a tiny flash of light on the camera display screen, got a flash it is sending.
Not knowing model all sets have a remote receiver in the front of them, those can go bad.

Check and see if the battery has enough power to charge the flash.
If the flash is not charging that means there is not enough power in the battery as the flash requires more power than other functions of the camera.
Try replacing the battery, clean contacts of the battery also and try.
Let me know please.
Thank you,
AJ.
