This all comes down to file size of the picture and the quality you are printing in. Check your printer settings and see if you are printing in least, normal or best quality. Also look at the actual size in pixels of the picture you are printing.

Press the MENU button, select TOOLS or SETUP, select DEVICE SETTINGS, then plain paper feed settings and alter the settings to suit. This can also be performed from the computer from the printers and faxes folder (or devices in Win8). Open the printer window, click "Printer" then printer preferences and select paper source.
Print a test sheet to see if the printer is OK. If tthe sheet prints fine has this printer worked on this computer before? Did you change anything or update anything? You may have the wrong driver installed or the cable could be defective if it has worked before.
The print head electronics are failing, you may get a little more life out of it but I'm sorry to say that nine times out of ten the printhead will need replacement.

10% of the time the printhead and logic board will both be faulty and require replacement AT THE SAME TIME, a faulty board can trash a good head and a faulty head has been known to trash a good logic board.
you will need at least 40% ink in each of your cartridges to prime the new printhead
Cancel printing, turn off the machine.Then clear the jammed paper or protective material that is preventing the Print Head Holder from moving, and turn on the machine again.

The serial number of the MX882 is located inside the printer, as shown below.
With the printer powered on, open the Paper Output Tray (A).
The above illustration shows a PIXMA MX870.
Lift the Scanning Unit (Cover) (B) and fix it with the Scanning Unit Support (C).
Wait until the print head carriage moves to the ink tank replacement position.
To the right of the print head carriage, inside the
printer, is a white sticker that is attached to a metal plate. The
serial number is located on the white sticker. Please see the
illustration below. The serial number starts with four letters and ends with five numbers, for example: ABCD01234.
