SOURCE: tv is buzzing when in use
There is a PC board in the back that will have transformers on it ,if you know how to solder you can probaly fix this yourself, find the one that is humming unplug the tv and remove the board with the transformer, remove the transformer from the board and soak it in some lacqer for a day ,tap it a few times to be sure it gets all in it,let dry for a couple of days and replace this should stop the buzz if not sure how to do this ,let a qalufied tech preform this for you ,knowing the problem might save you some cash

Most likely this is caused by a defective main board. Changing the main board will fix the issue about 95% of the time.
To be absolutely sure, the voltages need to be checked on the power supply. If they are not the values listed in the service manual, then you should replace the power supply instead (accounts for the other 5% of the time).

Below is an image of rear side of your TV, Sony KDL-40W5500
Top right corner is marked there and possible cause of noise seems back light inverter board, there are high voltage going to CCFL inside LCD panel and seems high voltage leakage causing that buzzing/ fuzzing noise.
Replace back light inverter board upon voltage leakage confirmation.

Testimonial: "Thank you very much for the very prompt reply. This seems a very likely cause. My TV is only a week old so I will contact the supplier. Thanks again."
This is a common problem with this screen, and is caused by a faulty inverter on the panel. Newer ones have a modified part and the fault is recognised by Sony as a manufacturing fault. Therefore you should have no problem having it repaired.
