Try uninstalling and reinstalling Google Play. Also try uninstalling old apps you don't use anymore. The 10.1 is about 8 years old, so it's possible that your version of Android is too out of date and there is some interference between versions of software and the OS.

There are tablets that does support Google Play Services, meaning that all of the Google apps will work out of the box. And there are tablets that does not have the Play Services support, meaning that you won't be able to use any of the Google apps.
Usually all brands tablets, like Sony, Samsung, Acer, Nvidia, Nexus, etc... does come with Play Services support. But if you bought a knock off or a Chinese tablet, your Google apps just won't work. And this is exactly the information that we needed to let you know why it's not working.
1. Remove the updates for your Google Play
- Go to the menu->settings->apps->all->google play store-> uninstall updates, then reboot your device.
2. Remove the cache for your Google Play
- Go to the menu->settings->apps->all->google play store-> remove cache, then try to run your google play again. It is better to do a reboot.
3. Try to delete and re-install Google Play
- In some cases, delete and re-install resolve this issue.
4. Try to delete your google account and add your google account again
- Go to the menu -> settings -> account remove your current google account then add it again here.
Try and delete then re install the app. If it's a system app just uninstall the updates. See if that gets google play working again. Reboot after you uninstall and see if that helps.
