Question about Apple iPhone Smartphone

18 Answers

IPhone won't shut off.

Okay, here's my problem. Earlier today, I was trying to check a missed call on my iPhone, and I tried to click the phone button, and the iPhone wouldn't let me click on anything, so I try to shut it off, and it acts like it's about to shut off (With that circle thing that lights up, like it's loading...the sign that tells you the iPhone is about to shut off.) and the iPhone has been like that for about an hour now, and won't shut off.

Can someone help me?

Thanks.

Mine just did the same thing - lit up but wouldn't let me slide to unlock it and wouldn't respond to my attempts to shut it down. I held the sleep button on the upper right and the home button simultaneously until it finally shut down...

  • Anonymous Jul 14, 2008

yes same thing i would push the home button but it wont bring up the main incon desktop, so I went to shut it down by pressing the upper right and home button and now i just have a white screen and cant turn it off completely or get it back to the main icon page ....just a white screen HELP!!

  • mary_decicco Aug 16, 2008

I used the power button on the top to turn off the iphone. I moved the slider and got to the small circle of lines showing that it was powering off. It has been powering off for over an hour now. I have tried it docking it into the charger, and plugging it into my lap top. Neither one has had any impact. I have had my iphone for almost a year and this has never happened.

  • laurenk23 Aug 18, 2008

I don't have a solution unfortunately. In addition to the iphone not shutting off, when it is not being used, the phone will light up after a minute, utilizing unnecessary battery. I am not sure what to do about it. I am using firmware 2.1.

I am having a problem with my iphone. I just got the new upgrade 2.0.2. for my phone 5 days ago (I have the original Iphone). I downloaded some new apps from the apps store within those 5 days and did not have any problems. Today I was listening to my ipod part of my phone without any headphones and also texting. After about one hour of listening to music and texting I tried to look at my home page so i clicked on my home button and all that showed up was my contact favorites. So i tried to turn my phone off because I couldnt go to my home page but all it does is lock the phone the off slide doesnt even show up. so i tried to put it in my charger and it wont even charge its like my phone is frozen. but the only things i can use on my phone are my contacts, texting, and my ipod on my phone. all of the other parts i cant see.

  • tehtrix7 Sep 13, 2008

so i was playing labyrinth and after maybe 10 minutes, if not more, i clicked the home screen button which after a slight lag took me to my phone favorites. I tried to go to the home screen once again but my attempts failed. my iphone would only work on as a phone. i tried shutting it down, but when i pressed the button on the top right of the iphone it only went to sleep mode and wouldn't turn my phone off no matter how long i held down the button. i then pressed the home button and the off button together and this turned my screen all white and then nothing worked at all, all i could do was put it to sleep, and if i turned it back on it was just white. what i did was plug it in and once itunes recognized it, i restored it and updated it as well as backed it up. now it's fine:) hope my advice helped:D

  • Anonymous Sep 13, 2008

i have exactly the same problem. I sent a txt i think, then the next time i went to the iphone it was on "favorites" and takes me there even if I click the home button once. I can't get to any screens at all except favorites, recents, contacts, keypad, and voicemail! When I press the top button to turn it off it just goes to sleep then i get the "slide to unlock" when turning back on. Charger won't work, and itunes is about to update to 2.1 so hopefully that ill solve it, I'm very wary of holding both buttons together because my last iphone had a problem and that was the cause of it, it was in a continual loop of never turning on just loading loading!

  • ljw1949 Nov 08, 2008

The only thing that will show up when I "slide to unlock" is the phone part.  When I press the usual button to go from mode to mode, nothing happens.  I thought maybe turning the phone all the way off and then on again might work, but it won't turn off.  Will go to black screen, but no matter how long I hold it, won't turn off completely.  At one point, the play/pause part of the iPod screen showed up at the top of the wallpaper screen.  How can I fix?

  • horvatherwin Nov 16, 2008

my iphone just stays on the regular "slide to unlock screen" but it doesnt let me slide to unlock it................it doesnt let me turn it off or anything it just stays on the slide to unlock screen.....then I thought maybe I won't charge it and it might die so I havent charged it in about 4 days and the battery sign didn't even go down a little bit, it still has full battery so can anybody help?? please

  • haleysaylo Mar 02, 2009

    I had the same problem...

First my IPhone would not exit away from the "Favorites" list,
Then it would not even allow me to use the home button to exit that application
    Things continued to quit working...
It wouldn't turn off or even allow me to insert my password to gain access to the main screen after hitting the Sleep button.

BUT... after many tried things, resetting the phone worked! Just hold down the "Sleep" button on the top, while at the same time holding the "Home" button for at least ten seconds. The apple logo should come up and everything went back to normal for me after that.

I have the same problem... early this morning (too) I checked my iPhone to see if I had a missed call. But some strange message apeared in the screen saying something about Mocha (the VNP program) and if I want to allow some number to connect... WTF was that!? Then I dsicovered I could'nt go to tha main screen. When I touch the home button once nothing happens, but twice it takes me to the favorites.
The first thing I tried is to shoot down my iPhone and reboot. But the shoot down button only worked for going to the lock screen.

I'm so scrared! I thing someone entered in my iPhone!
My iPhone is 2G and jailbreacked.
I have the openSSH installed and the Mocha VNC lite installed. I think that someone entered that way...

    Can anybody help me!?

  • Anonymous Apr 29, 2009

I am in the process of trying to restore my phone. It's hooked up right now. At first, it was stuck on the phone screen, where I could just make phone calls and such. I kept trying to turn my phone off, but no matter how many times I pushed it, it wouldn't turn off. Then on top of that, the home button wasn't working at all and it wouldn't recognize that I had plugged it in to charge. So I hope that this works out after restoring it and all.

From the apple.com website - the 2nd one worked for me:

If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond

  1. Press and hold the Home button for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
  2. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I have never beeen able to turn off my iphone....EVER. It's been on for 1-1/2 years. Can not manually shut it off. The only way it powers down is when the battery dies. That's it. Tried everything...i think. Hence, in order to jailbreak it, you must be powered off and rebooted from the off position. This sucks because I can't do that and I want to jailbreak it!!

This worked for me, it hung on the allpe logo for about 15 mins but then it started up. I then turned my phone off and on again, it took sometime but it worked. This happened after I installed lockdown Pro, the cracked version, but it seems to be working fine now!

  • Silver Fox Dec 11, 2011

THANK YOU! IT WORKS! The last suggestion! I have the same exact problem, it froze when I was on YouTube and I tried to turn it off but a black screen lit up and there was a white "loading" circle. This happened like nine months before to me and that time I had to wait until the batteries die. It was so annoying because I had to wait like a whole day until it shut off. To kobikobi and everyone else who has the same problem he/she has, if it's like that everyday, call Apple Support and get a replacement. Unless I'm wrong, and it's not the same as Amazon due to experience with my Kindle breaking two times -.- I talk a lot and waste time so just one more thing before I go to bed, THANK YOU!

  • Silver Fox Dec 11, 2011

Oh wow thx! I have the same exact problem! I was on youtube and everything froze, then a black screen showed up with that white circle too. This happened to my Iphone before and it was really annoying because I had to wait for it to run out of batteries (the buttons don't respond) . It worked perfectly fine after that and for like 9 months until it did it again. Which is today. But then I found this, and I tried the last suggestion and it worked! THANK YOU!!! I wouldn't waste a bunch of time now waiting for it! And for the people who tried all of these and this happens repeatedly similar to kobikobi, I think you should call the apple company and demand a new iPhone/iPod. They'll probably give you a free one for the broken one. Unless I'm proven wrong because I'm assuming this happens at Apple too due to my experience with my Kindle breaking two times -.- Anyways I talk a lot, and that all I have to say except for one last THANK YOU!

I had a similar problem. The iPhone went to a black screen and buttons wouldn't work at all, not even the shut down button. I pressed the shut down button together with the main function button (the one in the front) and it turned off. Afterwards, it turned on properly.

I had a similar problem, that is, the iPhone came up with that little circle thingy, and I figured out how to turn it off while this was happening (it was pretty scary since it was just out of the box!).

If it happens again, Hold down the home button and the sleep button at the same time and it should turn off.

Have a good one!

I had a similar problem with my iPhone seizing up- wouldn't go back to main screen or recognize that it was plugged in to charge- and when I tried to reset it by pushing both buttons simultaneously it just took a photo of the screen.  Just before I called Apple Care I took out my SIM card out of phone and then put it back in.  The screen unlocked temporarily and the next time I tried to reset- as prompted by Apple Care- it reset.  It did take longer than the estimated 30 seconds to get back to the standby screen- more like 1.5 minutes.  Now all seems to be fine.

My Iphone 3g locked up today in the "phone" menu, and no matter what I did, I couldn't turn it off or reset it. The solution: I connected it to my computer, took a backup via iTunes (ticked all the right boxes in iTunes under the iPhone icon, also took extra backup of contacts into outlook), and clicked "restore" on the summary tab. The phone then reset itself to factory settings, started up normally, and then continued to restore almost everything I had on the phone, including address book, full txt msg history, photos, bluetooth pairings etc. It even manage to restore data in some of the downloaded apps from iTunes store (such as all voice recordings in AudioMemo). The only thing I have found so far that it didn't restore, understandably, was my music, which was no problems since I only downloaded it again from my iTunes. I am really amazed at how well it worked.

u may have already fixed this by now, but mine was doing the exact same thing, until i plugged it into itunes and upgraded the software, it took about 20mins to do but eventually it worked and all has been fine since. Since then I have gone into setttings and there was an option saying when home button is pushed twice take me to the favourites list or something, so i have disabled that.

It's usually an issue with the logic board, so ultimately if you want to resolve it, the logic board needs to be replaced. Try to restore the iphone to exclude that it's a software issue, but if that doesn't work and If you're under warranty apple will likely give you a new one. If you're out of warranty you can attempt a self-repair if you're comfortable with opening devices like that, There are iPhone Repair guides that show you how at http://www.portatronics.com/guide. It's kind of a minor issue to take the risk of breaking things further though.

hold down the power button and home button for roughly 10 seconds sometimes it can take anything up to a 1minute. This almost always works. My froze and i tried this, worked first time.

When your screen goes off from holding them down. Plug you iphone into itunes and it will load and your all set.

Probably the flex cable that connects the button to the mother board is damaged. This part is cheap and easy to install.
You can find the replacement parts here:

Iphone shuts off and won't turn back on what do i do?

You might try holding down the power and home buttons at the same time. Wait until you see the silver apple. Thats what I did when mine wouldn't turn back on.there is an easier way instead of just guessing....
when you plug it into any form of charging source...just completely shut down your iphone...and leave it there for how ever long it takes to charge...(to be able to use it again is about 30 minutes)depends on your energy sourceFirst open iTunes and Conect your iPhone cord to your computer, but do not plug it into your iPhone. Then press and hold the home button on your phone while conecting the iPhone cord into your iPhone continue to hold down the home button. Then click restore in iTunes

Hi,
the battery cannot be easily removed form you iPhone, if at all.

how did you turn off your iPhone ? Was it using a long press on the Sleep button, which makes a slider appear saying " Slide to Power Off" ?
if that didn't work, try this :
-press and hold the Home button, while at the same time pressing and holding the Sleep button
-keep holding those 2 buttons until the Apple logo appears. This could take as long as 10 seconds or more.
this action resets the memory circuits, and may resolve the problem.
