Dot matrix printheads go bad, can be rebuilt, never had great luck cleaning, pins get stuck out.. Also there is a lever that moves the printhead closer or farther from paper. make sure that is in the right position. Usually on top cover may have numbers by the lever such as 1 , 2 , 3 etc
There are a few things that are possibly wrong with your printer. You may want to try completely unplugging and reinserting the cord into the power outlet. If that doesn't work, check your printers ink levels and ensure that there is no paper jam. Best of luck.
disconnect the LPT cable, and try a usb cable, the wierd printing should stop while the cable is disconnected. I'll be willing to bet there is something trying to print or poll the printer from the computer. that is causing the random characters. check to see that there are no other printers configured g to print/connect to same LPT1 port, from an old printer installation. (thus switching to the USB cable). Be also sure to download the latest drivers for your operating system for the OKI, from OKI's website
