Formatting could easily destroy the entire contents of the hard drive. It should be used with extreme caution. To be more selective, go to settings, then programs and uninstall what you do not need. If you formatted in error, do not do anything more with your drive if you want to recover precious data or files. Instead take it to a data recovery service. Or use a bootable tool like EASUS link below if you are an advanced user. Every mis-step risks inability to recover files. How to Undo Quick Format on Hard Disk
Just remove the hard drive and plug into a good working computer and using the Disk mgt area format the drive to erase all. Or if you want to chuck the unit and are concerned about contents, get a nice big nail and sledge hammer and drive the nail through the disk a few times! DONE!
okay, get a porable device such as a portable hard drive and copy everything to it, then put your laptop back to factory settings, it will wipe your hard drive and then install the original soft ware but make sure to copy all items, including your install setup programs so that you can install what you need, if you have the operating system (windows disk) then you can also format your hard drive, this will delete your whole hard drive and when its done it will reset, enter your BIOS and reinstall windows, this may take between 2 to 48 hours depending on your hard ware installed.

my l g hard drive recorder/dvd,suddenly would not delete programmes that i wanted to edit ,also the timeshift would not work, but i could still record ok,and i had a few hours space left on the hard drive .so i copied to disc my favourite stored programmes ,about 3 discs, and put them to one side .
i tried then to format the complete hard drive ,but it didnt do anything !so i put it on record for 7hours on sp,then i stopped recording, and tried deleting the programme straight away ,and it did !it also cleaned the hard drive empty ! the timeshift is ok and all else is ok ,so i fixed it witha bit of my logic !hope this helps someone one day !
Deleting from a external hard drive is the same as a internal.double click on external drive letter open to make sure you know what your deleting select all if all(from edit drop down ) delete.you can also just right click on folders and select delete. When your done you should defragment the drive to speed up drive.Good Luck.
If you have a Thomson DT16300, here's a handy fix that address freeze ups, lack of reception and problems on your Hard Disk:
goto MENU screen
goto SETUP screen
goto HELP screen
At HELP screen, Enter 1397 - this accesses the engineer panel - you can
reformat the HDD in this menu - you will lose all recorded programmes
and planned recordings but it clears locked or corrupted files
OR - at the HELP screen, press the GREEN button
On the lower half of the screen youwill see 3 options:
Blue - Reformat HDD - clears all the memory/HDD - useful if you have a
corrupted file - you will lose all recorded programmes though
Red - reset the whole box to factory settings - good if you have a
locked box or reception problems or cannto scan for new channels. It
goes back to when you bought the box, so you will have to input
favourites and planned recordings again
Yellow - Software revert - allows you to go back to the previous
software driver - you may lose new functions, but you can always
restore it back again using the same feature
