No picture or sound on a flat screen Hewlett Packard 42 inch plasma tv . what should I look for to see if I can fix it?

Your Tv possibly have faulty y sustain board, just replace that board to fix the problem

0ne of 3 has failed:
(in order of probability):

1. Backlight inverter
2. Power Supply
3. Backlight

Please seek the expertise of an experienced TV repair technician - as they contain potentially lethal voltages that must be properly discharged before work can begin.

Y Board is out. The boards costs about $150 and easy to install.

sounds like tuner control board

Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.

Take to repair shop this is no easy fix it yourself problem!
