I'm just shooting from the hip on this on, but I recall one disc being a CD and the other a DVD. You have to have a DVD/reader to run both. If you only have a CD R/W, you only get half the features. Dig?

I had almost the exact same problem when I tried playing on the weekend, I could play immediately after installing but after I closed the game when I tried to reload it I had the CD-Rom missing message....
I managed to get round it eventually by changing my display settings to 800x600 pixels.
To do this right click on the desktop and go to personalize, then go to display settings, then slide the resolution right down to 800 by 600....

You must use Dosbox, get it at www.dosbox.com. Follow instructions and you will be able to play most old dos games. I started playing Apache 95, the game before the one you're trying to load and it plays just fine with graphics, etc... I love that game and when computer technology got better my old dos games fell by the wayside until I found dosbox.
my friend when you install the game your installing to a program that is not a stand-alone computer. In order to erase that message, download a crack version of that program. Here's the link Age of Empire 2 just click the download button/.

The reason is, it only happens when you try to install Halo 2 on Windows XP.
The Game gets installed perfectly on Windows Vista
Because, I have installed and played the game on Windows Vista. But, when I de-graded my OS to Windows XP and tried to install the game. It gave me the same error message.
So, if your OS is Win XP then try install on Win Vista if you have it or on your friends PC.
But if you are already on Win Vista then please do let me know.
Also could please let me know whether your trying to Auto install the game
or you are manually trying to install the game by clicking Step.exe?
I would be glad to find some help for you in this regard.
goto properties of the file and in the compatibility tab enable "run this in compability for" and select the OS in which it used to work well... this might help....
