If I understand the question, "
How do you replace the rear site on a bolt action Winchester model 68 rifle?"
The rear sight is a dove tail which slides into a dovetail/tapered (grooved) notch in barrel. Look at your sight and determine which side of it's base is narrowest. Take a piece of chalk or lead pencil and index it, then take a brass drift place it on the narrow side and tap it sideways towards the wider side and it comes free. To put that sight back just reverse the procedure and align the index mark. Done deal.
The rear sights on your Ruger pistol should be installed in a dovetail, to adjust the rear sight you drift the sight to the desired position. Secure the pistol in a vice ( wrap to prevent marring) use a brass punch and hammer to tap the sight base, it may be tight but once it breaks free it will move.
Remove the butt plate (should be 2 screws), shine a light down the stock bolt hole to determine if you need a socket and extension or a long screwdriver. Use the appropriate tool to remove the stock bolt. Righty tighty, lefty loosey.
You shouldn't have to get the band past the front sight to remove the forearmbut you can turn the band upside down and slide it off. Depends on which sight is on your rifle. You may have to tap the front sight out of the dovetail slot
