App is downloaded but says connection error when trying to watch something
My Setup For Video Streaming
My video collection are all stored on a large 8Tb Drobo Drive attached to a MacMini... which is then connected to the Router via a short Ethernet cable.
This router is also the Home Internet / WiFi box.
The Drobo Drive has 4x WD 2TB drives fitted.
But any combination of sizes can be used.
They are Fully Automatic beyond RAID and Fault Tollerant. Meaning I can pull a drive out at any time and switch it for a new drive. Even when playing a video. Brilliant !!
If Required....I use Smart Converter (free) or Smart Converter Pro on the Mac to convert codecs to what I need. e.g. .MP4 to .AVI
I can then use an iPad or iPhone with the "Air Video HD" App installed to play any video on Drobo or other computer HD.
Any Mac required to stream the videos simply requires the free "Air Video Server" background extension to be installed on the Mac. This is set up to simply point to wherever the video's are being kept. (The Folder)
My 50" Pioneer HD TV Screen has a HDMI cable running to the older Apple TV3. That way I can use the TV's remote control to switch input to the HDMI port with the ATV3 attached.
Sliding UP on any iOS9 iPhone or iPad allows you to select the AppleTV and either watch Netflix (or many others) from it's menu or use the Air Video HD APP on the iDevice to choose your own Home Movies from your Hard Drive.
This has proven very versatile & convenient to use.
Hope this update helps others
Cheers

SOURCE: I have Netflix on my iPad so how do I get to watch movies on my tv?
You need a wireless or wired internet connection into the TV or another device that connects to the TV like a blu-ray player with Wi-Fi included. Once you have the bluray player installed, then you access their menu and install their apps. Each bluray player is different so you would have to answer back with a model and manufacturer to give you specifics to your model.

Likely cause: Your wireless router may need to be power cycled, or the connection settings have changed.
How to fix: Power cycle your router; redo the connection settings on the Wii and try again.
