Gnev120w Made a noise, now not freezing.

(sounded like a fan), for an evening. Now the contents of the freezer are defrosting. The fan does not seem to be running, and the was a red indicator lit on the panel. There is a faint electrical burnt smell. Has the fan burnt out? Would this affect any other components, and why should this happen?

The fan only controls air circulation. not the function of the motor. sounds like ur fridge is stuck in the defrost mode? check ur cold control thermostat with a multi meter for continuity. the fan does not run while in defrost mode, u can manually check ur defrost timer in the fridge by sticking a small screwdriver into the hole underneath it, and turn clockwise till u hear a click u should hear the fan and compressor come on if not turn 1 more click?

Testimonial: "The bottom was still cold. The circ fan was not running. I have replaced it. The old one gets hot and the bracket had melted and deformed causing the fan to stall on the surround. Thanks for the suggestions."

SOURCE: GE ADORA DSS25KSRDSS FREEZER FAN NOISE

Unplug your unit and check the fan blade by manually rotating it with your finger, check if the blade is not touching the fan blade frame. Check if the screws are not loose, align the fan blade and re tight the fan blade screws.

SOURCE: Freezer not freezing, water in freezer

The frige may be stuck in defrost mode. If the compressor and condensor fan are not running then it is likely in defrost mode. If the compressor is running continuously then there may be a leak in the sealed system where the refrigerant is low or gone. There is a tech sheet located in the very bottom area of the frige (behind the lower vent and in a plastic holder usually). Pull that lower front vent off and use a flashlight to find the tech sheet for any troubleshooting help and were the defrost timer is. Sometimes you can use a flat blade screwdriver to advance the timer past the stuck spot and get it working again. As for checking for a sealed system problem you would need to pull the back wall cover off the freezer section to view the coils. Normal frost pattern would be all the coils covered with a light white frost. If the frost pattern suddenly stops and bare aluminum coils are showing there may be a plug or leak in the system. It's not too often that the new thermistors (your thermostat control) go out. To check you could short across the t-stat to see if you can force a compressor run or take the leads off the thermistor and check the ohm value with a multimeter.

YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE DEFROST CIRCUIT. NORMALLY BOTH THE DEFROST COMPONENTS NEED TO BE REPLACED. NOT OFTEN DOES THE DEFROST TIMER GIVE TROUBLE SO IF BOTH COMPONENTS ARE REPLACED AND ELEMENT IS GOOD BUT ICE STILL BUILDS UP THEN TIMER WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED AS WELL.

SOURCE: SIDE BY SIDE Frig & freezer

hurlsdad.

Sounds like a noisy evaporator fan. Take the shelves out ot the freezer then take the panels on the back wall of the freezer off. The fan will be there. Then you will know for sure thats the source of the noise. When it is time to replace it...easy fix. (few screws) Here is an excellent source for the part..www.repairclinic.com. hope this is helpful,

SOURCE: red glow (from defrost heater?) at bottom of rear panel in freezer

This is from the GE Appliance "Knowledge Database" Web site:

Refrigerator - Explanation Of Red Glow

In a no frost refrigerator, the defrost timer activates defrost heaters in the evaporator section (rear of freezer) which heat up and melt the frost off the evaporator coils. This process lasts for approximately 25-45 minutes and usually happens up to twice a day.

During this time, there will be no running sounds, no fan noise, and you may hear water dripping or sizzling as it hits the heaters. On side by side models, you may even be able to see an orange glow at the bottom of the freezer.

This is normal.

Disconnect the defrost element and check with a multimeter for continuity. If there is no continuity, the element has failed. If the element is good, check the connections.

There is usually a Defrost Timer, but this uses a Defrost Sensor. Put 'defrost' into the Parts Search.

Unplugged frig overnite once I plugged back in made a gurgeling sound whenever I opened the door what would that be?

Usually that is caused by a bad defrost heater thermostat or defrost timer. Failure to automatically defrost is the cause of freezing up.
If you don't feel up to doing the work yourself you should have an appliance repair shop look at it.

The gurgling is caused by water in the catch pan under the fridge. When you defrosted it some of the water made it into the drip pan (and maybe overflowed onto the floor). The fan inside the compressor area under and behind the freezer may be splashing in the excess water in the drip pan. This by itself is not a real problem since it is designed to automatically evaporate the water drained during automatic defrosting, but the excess water and potential overflow onto the floor can become a problem.

Frost in freezer, fan in freezer sometimes changes speeds, low pitch or humming noise, manualy defrosted it 1 month ago seemed to be fine for two weeks, vegies freeze in drawer. hotpoint hss25gfta 5 yrs old

If the defrost thermostat is bad it will need to be replaced, otherwise you will have to continuously manually defrost the unit. The noise you hear is probably the fan hitting the ice. The defrost thermostat assists in melting that ice about every eight hours.

Our two door samsung has making noise from the motor and when you open the door it will stop. [email protected]

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

The noise that stops when you open the door is the evaporator fan. If it sounds like blades striking something there is most likely too much ice in the evaporator coils and the fan blades are striking the built up ice. If it sounds like a vibration it can be bad bearings inthe evaporatof fan motor.

Ice build up is usually a sign of an automatic defrost circuit problem. The unit should defrost close to 3 times a day depending on the defrost control installed. What you should do is do a manual defrost session by unplugging the unit, removing the freezer contents and directing a fan into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. This will ensure that all of the evaporator coil ice has melted. (Yes it makes a water mess) Tidy things up and return the unit to normal service after your manual defrost session. NOTE: If you have an automatic defrosting problem the fan noise can repeat in as little as 2 days as the ice once again builds up on the evaporator coils.

DO the manual defrost, LISTEN for noise after 24 - 48 hours. No noise... no worries, NOISE after 24 - 48 hours = Defrost problem. Causes of a defrost problem can be the defrost control, defrost heating element, the defrost thermostat or a wiring problem.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

I have a bottom freezer kenmore refrigerator model 596.72253200 and its making a grinding sound coming from the freezer. i found out that when the light its off on the freezer its when the noise starts

The noise your hearing is the evaporator fan. This is a sign of an automatig defrosting problem. Here is what you can do to prove that it is NOT an evaporator problem and most likely an automatic defrosting problem:

(MANUAL DEFROST)

1 Empty the freezer contents
2. Unplug the refrigerator
3. Place a fan blowing into the freezer section for about 2 hours.
(This will make a dripping water mess so be ready with the rags and the mop.)
4. After 2 hours wipe up the last bit of water mess.
5. Plug in the Freezer
6. Load freezer contents.
7. Listen for grinding noise.

My bet is the grinding noise is gone. However if you still hear it the evaporator fan motor has bad bearings in it.

The evaporator fan motor can be found here: (Item 18)
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-59672253200/0582/0161000/M0210209/00006?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=

If the noise is gone keep an eye on the unit after 2 days because if there is an automatic defrosting problem the noise WILL repeat.

The defrost control is item 13 this link: (Backordered)http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-59672253200/0582/0161000/M0210209/00003?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=

Part number is: 12566102

I did find it in stock here:
http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/part-detail.php?affiliate_id=seabreeze&item=12566102&brand=WPL

There can be other reasons for not defrosting properly but the control is the most common failure.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Frigidaire side by side freezer - LOUD noise...

It sounds like the evaporator fan is hitting ice that is built up on the evaporator coil. When it's making the noise, open the freezer door and see if it stops.
(Most models are wired so that the evaporator fan cuts off when the freezer door is open.)
Check the inside back, lower panel of the freezer for ice built up or frost on it. If there is, you have a defrost problem that is most likley a bad heater. It's located around the coil inside the freezer behind the panel you will be looking at. The defrost problem would explain the freezer not freezing ice cream.
