Mine had a similar problem. I assumed there might be some dust on the laser. I used an air compressor and pointed it at the DVD slot as it was opening and closing to blow some air around inside the unit (and hopefully dislodge any dust). It worked. The discs that would not play before did play after. I didn't have the air compressor nozzle too close to the opening as I didn't want to dislodge anything I wasn't supposed to. If it was dust on the laser, you might be able to clean it in other ways, such as removing the cover and using a cotton tip (take power off first!). That would have been my approach if I didn't have an air compressor.
hi.... I have this same problem every time.....first unplug it.....I use a clean cloth that is soaked in Rubbing Alcohol (not nail polish
remover, but pure rubbing alcohol). I basically open up the back, and
clean each roller. There are two green tabs at the top of the back of
the scanner. These need to be opened up (be careful, because the parts
sort of fall out if you're not careful, and they are difficult to
re-assemble).
Again, wipe everything down with the rubbing alcohol. Close up the
upper tabs. Make sure you wipe down the glass slits on both the door
(front-of-the-page scanning port) and on the unit itsel
(back-of-the-page scanning port). Before you close up the back door,
let it sit for about 5 minutes, allowing the rubbing alcohol to
evaporate.

OMG! I had the same issue and blew on the lens. To easy to be true, but it worked! I thought maybe it was a fluke, so I turned the camcorder on and off several times, and it worked every time! Sure beats the $341 Sony was going to charge to fix it!!!!
