Kindle was working fine, but then went blank, Cannot get it to restart.
Chances are your screen went defunct. Or it could be a problem with some other piece of hardware. You can try using the USB cord to plug it into the USB port on a laptop or desktop and see if the computer can read the files. If it can display and explore folders and files, chances are it's the screen (display) that went south. It it can't display and read folders and files chances are it's the memory or some other internal hardware that died. Sadly these things are cheaper to replace than to repair. I have a Kindle II with a faded out display. It works but the text is so light that it's barely readable so I retired it. I have a Kindle Touch that I dropped and the screen broke so I ended up getting a Kindle Paper White and I like it the best of them all.

I have the same problem. The screen saver is partially frozen on the screen on the upper right corner and then blank down the rest of the right side. The rest of the screen is readable and I'm able navigate (turn pages, select different books, etc).
Did you figure anything out? Help!

Make sure the device is charged and then slide and hold the on switch for several seconds. This will switch the kindle off (not just put it to stand-by as with a short flip of the switch).
If it was off already, or after the above procedure, the same slide-and-hold will switch it on again (this may take like a minute or so).
If the software just hung and there is no electrical or mechanical defect, the kindle should be ready again

Make sure that the kindle is fully charged. Plug your kindle into the wall charger, a yellow light will light up. When the yellow light turns green, your kindle is fully charged. Then try turning on your device. If the device still does not turn on, hold the power switch for 15 seconds, this will reboot the device.
