You could have a faulty inverter or a CCFL lamp, To determine if you have a LCD screen, inverter or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

I have an Evo n610c and the screen is very dark. You you can the windows background and icons if you look really hard because it is very dim/dark. Plug it to an external monitor and everything is good. So I bought a new screen but the same problem continued. I tried the screen on another evo n610c and it works fine. I was told the problem is the board and that is what needs changing. I haven't done that yet though so I cannot report on that aspect.

Thanks all. The problem was the motherboard. Bought a used motherboard on eBay and did the replacement. Screen working perfectly again.

We understand that your problem is: Hi, I've had this trouble before but it just went away so i didn't do anything about it. My Evo N610c is starting up as normal but after the "Compaq" logo comes up it...

Connect an external monitor to the VGA-port, and then turn the computer on, to see if the usual start-up messages and flash-screens are displayed during start-up.

It could be the "inverter" -- take your computer into a darkened room, and start it up. Do you see the usual video, but VERY DIM ?
If so, then the "inverter" (inside the LCD case) has failed.
It's about a $20 part, plus $50 to $75 for a qualified technician's labour.

Compaq Evo N610C Faint Screen

Usually it's the inverter. Sometimes it's the backlight / lcd, and occasionally it's the lcd cable and or video card.

Easiest thing to do is order a replacement inverter from ebay. They're cheap and then swap it. You just need to remove the outside lcd bezel, it's just four or five screws and you're in business.

Screen display

If the power saving settings on the screen brightness is ok, then the backlight on the screen maybe on it's way out.
