This means the internal diagnostic in your appliance have found a faulty in its operation. It may be a generalized code that is non-specific or it may be be accompanied by a number or series of flashes or beeps that tell a service tech what system has been effected. This being a heater my guess is it is a safety issue that prevents the unit from turning on.
A "P Err" readout means there is an overload in the pump/master valve circuit. A readout of "1 Err" means there is an overload in station No. 1, while "2 Err" means an overload in station No. 2 and so on, depending on the number of total stations being operated by the controller.
An overload occurs when the wiring circuit is requiring more than .56 amps of current. This overload will typically occur when the field wiring or valve solenoid is shorted, or if the field wiring is a smaller gauge than required for the application and/or distance.

Echoing Tim's answer, it means that the heater is recognizing an internal malfunction. Unfortunately, since this could be any number of things, there isn't much you can do about it. The best option would be to hire a heating repair service. They'll not only identify the problem, but they'll also be able to fix it. Good luck to you, Paula! http://www.southwestplumbing.biz/service...
