Hello, sorry to hear you are having problems,
THis is a classic symptom of corrupt finder preferences.
Best way to test this is to log in under another user account. If you do not have another user account, please create one, call it myadmin or something like that give it the same password as you have for your user and be sure to give it admin privileges.
You can do this by going into the system preferences and selecting the Accounts icon and clicking on the ( + ) on the bottom left hand side.
If the new user account exhibits the same symptoms, the finder may actually be corrupt. Don't worry, this is very very rare...
So, if the other user seems fine, we need to check a few things before going any further...
Have you installed any new programs or utilities or fonts or anything lately?
If so, be sure they did not install anything in your startup items, you can check this in the system preferences / accounts / Login Items...
go through the list and remove anything you did not put there yourself. If you do find a few things, simply select them and hit delete on the keyboard or the ( - ) minus sign on the bottom left hand side of the window.
If you removed several items, try rebooting and see if it is better.
If there was nothing, we may need to delete your finder preferences.
Are you up for this, we are going to trash your finder preferences and then restart ..
- make sure nothing is running except the finder
- open your user home folder
- open your library folder
- open your preferences folder
- find this file: com.apple.finder.plist
- put it in the trash
- DO NOT EMPTY TRASH
- DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE
- restart your computer
- empty trash once you have restarted
- fix up your finder the way you like it. Voila
You should be able to get on your way with this...
