This problem can often be caused by the DVD player software thinking it is in
a region different than your discs. (DVD discs are often encoded with
'region codes' meaning a disc purchased in Asia will not work in a
player expecting to see North American discs)
What can happen is
the player 'forgets' where it is, and your regioned discs won't play
any longer (region free discs should continue to work as will audio CDs
....)
A power surge, random cosmic ray or similar flakiness can cause a player to 'forget' what region it was designed for ....
If that is what has happened you need to 'reset' the region code.
Altho
I can diagnose this, I have NO CLUE as to how to do this with a hp DVD player. Anyone out there know how to reset the region codes
for this (or generically for a DVD player?)

The only discs that a DVD player is guaranteed to read are DVD discs. Support for CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW may be included, but is by no means guaranteed.
CD-R was designed to be read by an infrared 780nm laser. DVD uses a visible red 635nm or 650nm laser, which aren't reflected sufficiently by the organic dye polymers used in CD-R media. As a result, many DVD players can't read CD-R media. Some DVD players come with two lasers so that they can read CD-R.
But as I have already stated that Most DVDs today have the tendency of playing CDs. So if your DVD player is new then it must have that support. Have a look at the quality of your CDs also.
Hello The laser pickup unit of the DVD player may either be dusty or dirty. Try to clean it, by inserting a lens cleaning disc into the player and play it until it pays completley. Then check it out. If this do not help you, the laser pickup unit is faulty. It will be best to muy a new Player, rather than try to repair it, especially to computer DVD players. OK.
See if it would play regular cd, then see if it would play dvd's. The reason is because most gaming cd now and days are dvd's and maybe your dvd-rom has a driver issue or the laser head isn't reading it. So try that first, then see if the drivers for the cd/dvd rom is working properly in the device manager. It may need a dvd coded software, try installing like powerdvd or something. If it still ain't working, and it can't play dvd's then your cd-drive could be history
CD's and DVD's has different speeds try to check your dvd player/rom if it is compatible with your cd/dvd disk. Some dvd players are sensitive it will not play perfectly if your cd's are scratched. try to use new cd's. It might work.
I put a dvd in and it says format not supported
it's says wrong regional disc
