These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/

SOURCE: Power light blinking 2 times

2 blinks means the unit is having problem with 12 volt supply.
while power on you can check 12DC on power supply before shutdown.if the voltage is constant before shut down I would recommend to replace D board.

SOURCE: TH-42PX80U JUST TURNED ITSELF OFF

The 7 blinks indicates that a failure has happened within the Y main and the upper and lower y drive panels. I recommend you taking it in to a Service center for and evaluation.

SOURCE: Panasonic TH-50PZ80U tv, error- 2 blinks

1. Reseating the connector P25 may solve the problem. If it does not.
2. Unplug the unit andd disconnect the connectors A5, A6, and A7. Apply power to the TV. If a White screen comes up and all voltages check normal, replace the P board.
3. If the TV stays on after isolating the SC board, then replace the SC board and the D board; it is likely that the fuse on the D board is blown.

I have a 42" Panasonic

If you remove the back panel and check on the power supply board, you will find a couple of bulged caps that need to be replaced, or just replace the power supply board.

I have a TH-42PX80U. The picture went black and the red light does NOT blink. I tried a different power cord in a different outlet and still won't turn on.

More likely to have power supply module failure, that will be the first place to look.
Most common failures in PLASMA TV are due to bad power supply module, Z and Y Sustain modules.

Blinking red light and no picture

The 8 blink condition is a shutdown associated with a sustain voltage, possible that the set only has a loose conncetion, in most cases requires a board replacement, except on the TH-50PX80u, almost always a connection
