Looking at buying a iDV cable to view tape on my MAC
SOURCE: Using panasonic PV - GS250 with mac
I believe what you are doing is trying to download both video AND photos using the same port. They are two different functions. One connection is under the video door, and the other is in one of the other hidden ports of your camera. Give that a shot. Also, make sure the dial is set on playback (the red videocamera icon) when connecting it to your computer when you transfer the video. This is not the same when transferring photos (which come from the SD card you have, not the tape), and the wheel has to be set to PC.
Good luck!

Hello. I also have the PV-GS39. I had the same problem as you have, here is what I DID to resolve my problem.
1.Go to: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Cameras-Camcorders/Camcorders/MiniDV-Camcorders/Drivers-Downloads/model.PV-GS39.D
the above link will take you RIGHT to the web page to download the PV-GS39 Software & Drivers that YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE. But if you have WINDOWS VISTA then you can use the WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER software that is ALREADY PRE-INSTALLED on your PC then you will NOT have to download the software from the above link.
2. You HAVE TO have a: FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD. I got mine at: Best Buy for: $53.86 with taxes. the name of this card is: DYNEX FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD.
3. You ALSO hae to buy the CORD that connects to the PV-GS39 and the DYNEX FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD, the cord costs $36.79 ALSO at Best Buy.
I did ALL 3 of the above and now I'm copying my movies and videos from my tape in my camcorder onto my PC and BURNING the video onto DVD/CD Disks.
If you have any questions, you can email me at: [email protected].
Sincerely,
Rick D. Michaels

You are going to have to check that your firewire is being seen by windows 7 first of all. If not you will need to rectify that.
When you do get it to recognize it, here is a link for an update to the program that came with your camcorder for it to work with Windows Vista but it should also work for Windows 7.
