Dryer heats and then the drum keeps turning but we lose heat

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
The symtom your describing is that of poor air flow through the dryer causing the high temp limit thermostat to cycle the heat off... Due to poor air-flow it takes a long time to cool down so you have the presented symptom of.. heat... then no heat at all.

Check the following
1. Inspect the lint filter cavity for lint build up. (USe a flash light!!) Also wash the lint filter with vinegar and water then soap and water because dryer sheets will clog what LOOKS like a clean filter.
2. Go outside and check the outside vent and flapper for obstructions on BOTH sides of the flapper.
3. Remove the ducting from the back of the dryer.... Start the dryer and check the VOLUME of air-flow. It should push a relaxed hand and wrist away from the duct connection point. If you do not have this kind of air flow.... there is a clog of the internal ducting or the blower fan wheel is damaged or not turning at full speed. Blower fan wheels are notorious for the center hub cracking and then free-wheeling on the motor shaft.
4. Use a flashlight and look into the dryer ducting... ANY restrictions are unacceptable.

5. This is important also... check the dryer PLUG for any signs of being hot. Receptacle also. Then open the electrical connection access and inspect the terminal block on the back of the dryer. Look for off color terminals, burned wires a damaged terminal block. If you find problems here with any of the above; replace (not repair) the components that have been hot.

I will tell you that cleaning a dryer is not a simple task. When you think you have it clean usually your only half done. The air VOLUME is what is most important. Do the relaxed hand and wrist testing routine until you resolve the air-flow problem. Then and only then should you reconnect the dryer ducting to the back of the dryer.

These are the most common reasons for the symptom that you have. I would appreciate any feedback you have after performing the above. Feel free to ask questions anytime.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

My Maytag Dryer is heating up but not working to full heat level?

Hi,

If your
dryer is not drying like it once did or if you just have not taken the time to give yourself a clean dryer in a long time then you need to do that. At least once a year the dryer cleaning should take place. Lint build up in the dryer duct is one of the main causes for your dryer to fail.

Here is the rest of this tip about
Dryer Maintenance

Gas dryer heat not going on. Vent is now

In duct area there is a thermo switch. 1/4"x2" white in color. two wires are connected to it. This goes bad from overheating due to dirty duct work. This stops dryer from firing to ignite gas. Replace and you should be good. You can check all other thermo switches with a tester. Some are silver and round some are what I stated.

I have a kenmore electric dryer model #110.63032102 and have to send our clothes through twice before they dry.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

If your are sure the dryer is heating then there are a few things you muct check.

1. First of all remove the lint filter.
a. Inspect all of the air passages around the lint filter for lint build up.
CLEAN with a vacuum and crevice tool
b. Wash the lint filter with vinegar and water then soap and water. If you have been using dryer sheets in the dryer the material fromthe fabric softener sheets cakes onto the filter. The filter appears clean but will not allow good air flow through the dryer.
c. Remove the vent ducting from the back of the dryer. Clean out all of the ducting inside the dryer that you can reach. If you have to use a folded wire coat hanger to remove the lint in the dryer along witht he crevice tool.
d. Continue to clean the exit ducting on the house side of the ducting all the way to the wall exit. Go outside inspect and clean the vent flapper on the outside of the house.
e. After doing all of steps a - d above. While the vent is disconnected from the dryer start the dryer and check for a strong HOT air flow from the dryer vent exit hole. If there is not a strong HOT air flow there is still a problem with lint build up or the blower fan impeller is loose / broken on the motor output shaft.

Everything listed above assumes that the dryer is still heating. If the dryer is not heating then respond here and we can go from there.

Hi, i have a homebrand dryer. Model: TD50-89S. Without asking first,my son transferred washing to dryer. Unfortunately, there was alot of white fluff all over washing and he assumed the dryer could take...

Your duct work is probably clogged with the fluff, which will not allow the air to flow though like it should. When that happens, the heat builds up on the cabinet and the heat sensor shuts down the heat. Its an easy fix, it this is the case. Just remove the duct from the dryer, clean it out, clean out the fluff from the dryer duct connection, then go outside and inspect the outside dryer vent for clogs. Make sure the flapper is working on the outside vent as well. Good luck!

Laundry not getting dry

It normally takes about 45 minutes for a dryer to dry a full load. If your dryer is taking more than an hour, check these.

Vent
Heating element
Internal ductwork
Cycling thermostat
Vent Frequently there's an obstruction in the vent duct from the dryer to the outside of the house. For the dryer to heat properly, the duct must be clean and clear of lint or any other substance.

Heating element Your dryer's heating element may be partially burned out. If it is, your dryer still heats, but at such a low temperature that it takes three or four times as long to dry the clothes. If the element is partially burned out, replace it.

Internal ductwork Your dryer has some internal ductwork. If it gets clogged, your dryer can't dry properly. In most dryers, to get to the internal ductwork to clear the clog, you have to substantially disassemble the dryer. A quick way to check for internal clogs is to remove the lint filter and use a flashlight to inspect the inside of the duct. If it looks clogged and you can't clear it using your vacuum, contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

Kenmore dryer no heat

If the dryer runs - but no heat is produced, there are usually two things that it would normally be - first turn the dryer on and go outside and check the flow at the duct. If the flow at the duct is weak (should be nice and strong) then you more than likely just have a clogged up duct - clean it out and you should see a big difference in airflow and time to dry things. If the air flow is good but there still is no heat - you may have a heater bank that went out, or a hi limit switch that was set
