It varies from model to model. Generally you must:
- level the mount with a bubble level. The one fitted in the mount is never accurate
- for a GEM mount, point it at the Celestial Pole. There are many methods for doint this, eg use a good compass and an inclinometer set for your latitude
- for an Alt-Az mount, align it due North (or South if in that hemisphere) and dead vertical.
- do a 2 star alignment (3 are usually not required)
