How to fix CD player that reads no disc on my shelf unit?

Presuming that other sources work okay and the the cables are connected correctly.....Try a CD Lens cleaner.

If that doesn't work then it's time to open up the unit and manually clean the laser lens. If that still doesn't work then the laser might be dead. Replacement parts may be available. Whether or not you can do this as a DIY repair though is questionable. It depends on your skill..

WON'T PLAY CD'S READS "NO DISC"

  • Check the disc you're using for scratches and dirt. If the disc is damaged it won't play properly, regardless of the CD player's ability to function. You can use a CD repair device like the "Disc Doctor" to repair the CD or purchase a new CD.

  • Clean the laser lens with a CD laser lens cleaning disc. CD laser lens cleaning discs can be purchased at most electronics retailers or online. Insert the laser lens cleaning disc and follow the instructions.

  • Insert a correctly-formatted, undamaged disc into your player. Listen to see if it begins to read the disc. If it continues to make no sound and gives you the same message, then the problem is probably that your disc is not spinning in the device.

  • Clean the lens while the DVD player is open. A dirty lens is most likely the cause of your no-disc error. The lens should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.

The CD player will play some purchased CD-s but will not play others. The ones that it will not play do NOT iniate the disc motor but a click is heard and the display reads NO DISC. I have cleaned the...

If you can disassemble the CAP(disc holder) and place it on the disc while it is on the spindle and at the same time push the (hidden)lid switch you will see the lazer"s lens move up and down while trying to focus on the disc. If the lazer see's the disk it will tell the motor to turn. If it dosn't see the disc it will not turn the motor. Some model will kick the disc to spin a little while trying to see the disc. This type of player can be tricked into seeing the disc if you spin the disc a little by hand when the lazer's lens is moving up and down. At that point in time it might see the disc and take over the motor and spin up to normal speed. If the disc is an illeagal copy sold as a original the quality of the disc could be the cause. If the player is very clean (no small hairs stuck to the glue that holds the lens in place) (never clean with a cotton swab, use a shammie swab with rubbing alcohol or isopropal 99%) the problem could also be that the lazer is just not strong enough and the whole lazer-motor assemble should be replaced. Older units could use 1 drop of light motor oil on the motor shaft at the bearing to help start the motor when the system kicks the disc to spin. If the player reads the disc at the time you manually spin the disc maybe a good cleaning and oiling is all that is needed. The disc spins clockwise. if the disk spins counter clockwise replace the whole assemble. Maybe simpler, just give the disc a good clockwise spin and quickly close the door and push play while the disc is still spinning. if it starts, there you go. Don't use caned air on the lazer assemble. it will blow the dirt further into the lazer mechanism under the lens and make matters worse! Good luck!!

I was pretty disappointed when I couldn't play a 12 year old game on my new macbook either. The best thing to do is go to battle.net, load up the CD key and then load the software onto your mac. The downside is that you will need internet access before playing even if you play single player. That's the way I got around it.

I works mechanically, but doesn't play the CD

try cleaning the lens first use a lint free swab and GENTLY clean the lens. don't use any liquid on this. if that doesn't work then load a disc and gently spin the disc when it lifts into load posistion. if begins to spin on it's own then replace the spindel motor. if it still does not spin, replace the optical pickup, the EF sensors inside the pickup no longer have the ability to read (see) the disc.
