I'm trying to repair an HP Pavilion g7-1173dx laptop that will boot up normally and after a few minutes the backlight goes out and the screen becomes dark. If you shine a flashlight onto the screen you can see the image fine and on an external display there is no issue at all. Because of this I thought that the problem would be either the Inverter or the backlight itself, however when I disassembled the laptop it appeared as though this model has the light and inverter both inside the LCD screen? The screen model is LP173WD1 (TL)(C3) and I have replaced it with a proper replacement screen and the issue still continues. I know how to locate and replace inverters on other laptop models, but I just don't see one in this model which is what led me to believe it was in the screen. Any help would be appreciated
The inverter is almost always below the screen in the bezel. You should only need a plastic pry bar (cost about $3) and you pop the bezel off from the screen side usually, you may need to check for screws under any rubber stops on the screen too. After the bezel is off the inverter should be on the bottom with two plugs into it. Unplug, pull it out and swap.
