Why do you need to update the machine ? To update you need a canon support tool and the specific firmware for that model ( both are very difficult to find) most part of the times updates doesn't correct the problem
You will likely need to restore you iPod to its factory configuration. Dock the iPod (or plug in the cable) and let iTunes mount and sync the device. Once finished, there is an option in iTunes to Restore. Run this, follow the directions. After restoring, allow iTunes to re-sync your media to the device.
