Just visit the site given below. It has screen shots to defective Sony Bravia. Compare it to that of your TVs' and make sure about the fault. In most cases, the fault you described here sill be repairable.
I have a different Sony, but I think they all work the same. Go to menus (Press Home) Then select "Settings" and select "Screen Settings". Set Wide Mode to "full", Auto Wide to "off" , Auto Display Area to "off", Display Area to "normal". I hope this works for you
Check for loose contacts in power outlet, RC cable, jack and socket. In order to ensure, it is not caused by the input device, connect a DVD player and see.
When the color of the screen is complete green, you should not worry. That is the normal color that should be on the screen when no program is coming in because the cable box is off. So simply press OK on the remote of your digital box and your will see picture on your TV. If none appeared, then there is problem on your cable box. Call then your service provider.

Sunday evening the picture on my Sony Bravia suddenly went very red and there are blurry lines after action. TypeHi.

Hook up the player with RGB (Red-Green-Blue or component) cables and try the picture. If everything works OK, then go to the menu and turn on the HDMI output and set the resolution (if needed). Not every HDMI unit works with every HDMI TV. You may also have a bad HDMI cable. On a DVD recorder, you may have your HDMI cable connected to HDMI IN. You must use HDMI out.
