Why won't one of the spa motors start at low speed?

If I press the start button twice, the motor will start with high speed (correct), and if I then press the button once again, the motor will continue at low speed. So it's only the start at low speed that wont work, if the motor is running at high speed and I press the button for low speed the motor will run at low speed.

SOURCE: High speed spa pump shuts off

The motor may have a thermal cutoff if the motor draws too much current. Do you have a sufficient large gauge circuit supplying the motore? If not the actual voltage at the motor may drop, causing it to draw more current to make up for the loss of voltage, thereby tripping the motor's protective breaker. I assume the motor will start again after serveral minutes of cooling down.

Either the low speed circuit is defective or a relay is inoperative. If you feel confident , you could switch the low and high speed leads on terminal plate. The high speed jet button would activate low speed on pump if motor is good.

SOURCE: Motor is hooked up correctly according to

You have 220v running into your motor, the red and the plack are in most cases the same 110v line and what your calling a white netural is a common line. In other words the second half of your 220v line. If your red and black are the two opposing 110v lines that make up your 220v and they are put on the motor and turned on they short aginst each other and blow the breaker. One of your 220v lines should come into your hi -low switch and then split to your high and low on the pump. The other half of your 220v line will go to the common or what your calling nuteral. The difference is a netural completes a 110v circut and a common completes the 220v circut it will take to run the motor. One of the splits will complete the low speed circut and the other will complete the high speed circut. You need to check your voltage comming into the spa, the way the spa is wired (110v-220v), and how the motor is wired (110v-220v). For your spa this will be in your owners manuel or on a scematic inside a panel or door and is quite often a plug you change from one spot to another. On your motor will have a scematic on the back of the motor that will tell you haw to adjust the wireing already in place on the wire board of the motor. This may sound deep but if all your voltages are set the same and your high and low are the same leg of power, this should fix your problem.

SOURCE: Intermittent jet problem on Spa form hot tub

Hmm, that's an odd one. It could be either a fault with the PCB or the pump.

The first thing to check is the voltage to the twin speed pump. If that's ok the motor is probably the cause of the fault.

As always, with anything electrical you need to be very careful with what you're doing and if you're unsure seek professional help.

Regards,
Ian.

I have a waterway 115v, 2 hp 2 speed pump that starts in the low speed setting but hums in the high speed setting. replaced the starting capacitor, checked the starting switch and governor, both ok

perhaps you should take it to motor shop ( google motor rewind and repair in your area).. Electrical motors that run in water should be repaired by insured shop.

Four winds. My pool pump will not start on the low side when I push the button. It will work on the high side. Also it will pump on the low side automatically after I have run it on the high side. ...

The motor starting switch is probably failing on the low speed side so as long as motor is running on high after starting on high it will continue to run if switched to low. You can try to replace the switch or take the motor to a local electric motor repair shop for them to quote the fix.

Pentair WhisperFlo 1hp, 230v, Dual Speed won't start in morning

If the high speed side of a two speed pump will not operate it is because there is a problem with the windings on the high side of the motor.
You will need to either take it to a motor shop and have them fix it or replace the complete motor.

My pump works on low speed but not high speed

these are a bear to work on.. there are start switches inside of the motor, and will break if you even look at them wrong.(fragile) you can try compressed air to blow out the trash that might be in the switch..or unhook power cord of the motor from the motherboard and remove the pump and motor from the spa , bring it to your local pool pump moor repair guy with free testing have it tested. if removing wires from motor YOU MUST REINSTALL THEM EXACTLY AS THEY CAME OFF ! OR YOU WILL BURN UP THE expensive 2 speed motor .. jay Florida

You are correct. Appaently you have a short in the winding connection and that is not a do-it-yourslef type of repair. Unfortunately, the cost to fix something like that is high since it is labor intensive and you may want to look into a new motor since the chances of additional or near future failures is likely. If you would like a quote on a new motor, contact us thru www.arrowmotor.net and be sure to include the voltage you are connecting to as a 1.5 HP is available in both 115 and 230VAC.
