That depends on the lens you have mounted on the camera. In general, you turn the zoom ring on the lens to the desired position.

It should be damaged. Change it otherwise.

And it wont. it needs serviced,

When I turn on the camera it says "The zoom did not operate normally, insert the battery again and turn the camera on..."

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). Pull gently back and forth on the lens while in outward position. Do this several times until you hear a click. This will put the lens back in place and should go in and out afterwards with no problems.The lens was knocked out of alignment when dropped and do the above will put it back into alignment.

Hi had this problem with my WB100. Zoom would come out then pop back in and say zoom nit not operate normally, please put new batteries in and try again or contact bla bla. What i did when the zoom popped out is i held onto it and didnt let it retract back and turned it back on. It worked after that so i guess the zoom must of been a little forced in when it was in use last in when turned on it wasnt fully going forward. Worked for me so worth a shot
