You may have a defective compressor or bad thermostat or bad defrost timer.

I TURNED THE CONTROL TO OFF TO DEFROST MY FREEZER. WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON THERE IT DOESN'T COME BACK ON AND THERE IS A LOUD BUZZER.
IS THERE A RESET BUTTON SOMEWHERE TO RESET THIS OR HOW CAN I GET IT TO COME BACK ON? I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE AND OF COURSE I CAN'T FIND MY USERS MANUAL. IT IS A 1994 MODEL FB14 DSDRWPT.

Do not put a towel on your freezer or anything that could prevent a good seal from top of freezer.

SOURCE: Whirlpool AFB126/H/AL Freezer - Defrosting & Refrosting

Hi. I am Kelly and welcome to FixYa. Here is the real question..... Is the food staying frozen?

Freezers usually defrost 3 times a day (8 hr intervals) Some as often as 4 times a day. The freezer use concept is that it is not opened more than 3 times a day. (Yes there will be more times than that any given week)

Having said all of that.... some things to look at.

1. Check the door seal for any signs of tears... grease... collapse...

2. Make sure there are no gaps in the door or between the closed door and the seal.

3. Many people don't check this one... but make sure it is level. An un-level freezer can cause the door seal not to function correctly.

Now if your saying that the food is actually defrosting... then there are a few other things that can cause that.

A. Sticking / defective Defrost timer

B. Defrost element is not heating and the freezer goes through a VERY long defrost cycle as the contents have to reach 60 Deg F for the 60 Deg bi-metal thermostat to close and advance the defrost timer to start the compressor.

C. Intermittent operation of the 60 Deg thermostat

I hope this clears things up a bit for you.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Lost manual and need to defrost

This is likely a manual defrost freezer, which means you have to remove the food, unplug the unit, and let the ice melt on its own. Do not, and i repeat, DO NOT poke the ice away from the walls. I guarantee if you poke the ice away from the wall, you'll poke a hole in the wall, and force yourself to buy a new freezer.

SLOWER IS SAFER. put some boiling water, in the pot, inside the freezer, or use a hair dryer.

I have had my freezer for a yr and one day it stopped running

Hi,

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer2_bing.gif and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Any possibility you can help troubleshoot a larger upright freezer? Our freezer is 3 years old. It sounds like it is working -- I can feel cold air and hear it humming, but as of yesterday it stopped...

Assuming the thermostat is set to call for cooling (sometimes they get bumped), check the condenser coils, fan, etc for debris build up and clean as needed.

Is the freezer frost free? If so, it's possible the defrost timer is stuck in defrost. There should either be a mechanical timer or it could be electronic these days. Check for bad connections or any obvious signs of damage (burn marks)

Make sure the freezer door closes tightly

How to unfreeze the deep freeze, and which of the two type is more reliable,.,., tc tnx and god bless

There are numerous methods to defrost freezers, from placing buckets of hot water inside to using hair blowers. I like to unplug freezer, unload freezer, use a plastic putty knife to scrape excess frost off walls if in a bit of a hurry, and to let it just thaw out, using the drain port in the bottom of the freezer, hooked up to the garden hose adapter that came with the freezer to run the water to a drain.

The chest freezers are a bit more reliable than an upright (in my opinion) and are more energy efficient, but do make it harder to find and organize items in the freezer. FYI: Virtually any brand name freezer on the market in the US was built by either Frigidaire in St. Cloud, MN, W.C. Woods Co., from Canada, or Haier Co. in China.
