A Hard Reset is the only way. Normally an Android reset is as follows;

Power OFF.
Press and Hold Volume Up and Power Button for 12 seconds.

However this says different

Press and hold the power button for 8 seconds to reset and reboot.

Depends if it is an apple or android tablet, and if it has a removable memory.
if it is a Samsung, remove the memory card, then factory reset the device. Yes you will lose some of your data but you will be able to access what us on the memory card.

You should be able to click on forgot password or contact customer service to reset it. If you create a new account you will lose any books games or apps you already purchased.

if you forgot your pin and know your icloud password , just do a restore and you will be fine but you will lose all your personal stuff on it ,

hard reset by recovey options

1. Enter wrong pattern 5 times and wait for 30 seconds.
2. Select "Forgot pattern" and enter your email account username and password.
3. Make sure you use the same account that was used to activate the device and double check the password by logging in to that email account in a browser.
4. If you don't have access to the original email account, you will need to do a hard reset and loose your settings and apps on the devcice. The data on the memory card will not be wiped though.
Note: if you can't remember your email password, you will have to visit the email service support page to get it reset.
