2005 Chevy Cavalier. Where is the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor located please?

Edited to tidy up the English, and the code is P-Zero, not P-Oh.

If your PCM is returning a P0113 error code, it means that your Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is reading at too high of a voltage. This sensor works as a basic resistor. The PCM sends it a continuous current of five volts, and monitors how much voltage it gets back.

P0113 Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input

Low temperature results in a high signal voltage. When the PCM sees a signal voltage higher than 5 volts, it sets this P0113 check engine light code.

P0118 - The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor screwed into a coolant passage in the cylinder head. Sensor resistance is high when coolant temperature is low and resistance drops when coolant temperature increases. The powertrain control module (PCM) provides a 5 volt reference and a ground to the sensor. The PCM monitors voltage drop to determine coolant temperature. If the ECT reads less than freezing temp. when engine has been running for more than a few minutes, the PCM determines a circuit fault and sets this code. Or if the PCM determines the sensor resistance is out of specs, this code is set.
Potential Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0118 could include:

  • Very poor fuel economyicon1.png
  • A no start condition
  • Vehicle may start, but run very poorly, blowing black smoke, running very rough and misfiring
  • Illumination of MIL
Causes

A code P0118 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • A bad connection at the sensor
  • An open in the ground circuit between the ECT sensor and the PCM
  • A short in the voltage feed between the sensor and the PCM
  • A bad PCM (less likely)
  • A bad temperature sensor (shorted internally)

Code P0113-P0183

DTC P0113 - Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the temperature of the air entering the engine. The PCM supplies a 5 volt reference voltage to the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. The IAT is a thermistor that varies resistance based on temperature. As the temperature increases, resistance decreases. Low temperature results in a high signal voltage. When the PCM sees a signal voltage higher than 5 volts, it sets this P0113 check engine light code.

I suggest to check wire connections.

The car has 2 codes first p0113 then p1627

P0113 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT sensor) Circuit High Input. Possible causes - Dirty air filter
- Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor harness is open/disconnected or shorted
- Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor electrical circuit poor connection
- Faulty intake air temperature sensor. P1627 PCM/ECM A/D Conversion Error

This is a code indicating that the on-board computer could not convert a piece of data it was given by one or more sensors. This one must be taken in and read the freeze frame data to see under what condition it detected an error and tech has to chase this problem. they will want to put a PCM in it and reprogram. no good news for this problem except have the code cleared for now and hope it doesn't come back.

Code no. 113 and 603 came up on the computer for my 2001 Ford diesal truck. What does the code refer to?

P0113 means you have an open circuit in intake air sensor area, or a bad PCM.

Is your intake air sensor unplugged? That would definitely cause that code. It's unlikely your PCM is bad.

The P0603 is because of your programmer and isn't anything to worry about. It just means the programmer has interrupted power to the internal memory when it uploads the new program.

Trouble Code Conditions:
Check with ignition on or engine running; battery voltage more than 10v; The PCM detected the IAT Sensor input was over 4.90v (exc. Dakota, Durango, Ram) or 4.98v (Dakota, Durango, Ram) for 3 seconds.

Possible Causes:
  • IAT Sensor signal circuit shorted to VREF (5v)
  • IAT Sensor signal circuit is open, or the ground circuit is open
  • IAT Sensor is damaged or it has failed (an internal open circuit)
  • PCM has failed

A code P0113 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Internally failed IAT sensor
  • Faulty connection at IAT sensor
  • Open in IAT ground circuit or signal circuit
  • Short to voltage in IAT signal circuit or reference circuit
  • IAT harness and/or wiring routed too close to high-voltage wiring (e.g. alternator, spark plug cables, etc.)
