Had the same issue! After calling Customer Service for Kodak, and then trying to understand the rep......it was determined that the printhead needed to be replaced. Took my information, and said I would be receiving it in 2-3 business days. It took one business day to get here, I replaced it and it works just like it did when I opened it up 5 months ago.
Oh and Kodak lets you believe that they are "giving you" new ink cartridges for your trouble...LOL You have to use the new ones in the new printhead or it won't work. Then they want you to send back the defective printhead with the old ink.
At least the printer is working again, so that's all that matters to me. I'm just praying that the next time the color ink runs dry, I won't have the same issues.

My solution to my first post: I exchanged the Kodak printer the following day for yeup, another Kodak printer. Fortunately, this one installed as it should and everything went smoothly. Until a few days later. :( Now, the problem I have (never had this with a HP before), When turning the printer on and speakers enabled, a sound will be heard from the computer letting you know a USB device has just been discovered. Which is all find and dandy - USB flash drives do the same little sound. Problem is, after a few seconds I get the USB disconnect sound, then a few seconds later the reconnect...arrgh! All cables are tightly seated and it's very frustrating. Almost like a little elf came packaged in the box to make life miserable by plugging and unplugging the USB cable. Of course, nothing can be printed because the printer thinks it is being unplugged from the computer. I spend more time trouble-shooting than actual printing! Anyone else have a similar problem??
I had the same problem during setup. I tried the sharp rapping and four-letter words solution, but that didn't work for me. I called customer service and after a looooooong hold (apparently everyone in the universe is having problems), I talked to someone who transferred me to the "print head" part of tech support. During the conversation I had so much trouble understanding the guy that I said I wanted to take him off speaker phone so I could hear him better, and I accidentally cut off the call. Wouldn't it be nice if call center people were actually understandable in English.
Nevertheless, he did give me a couple of instructions before I lost the call, and after I did them things worked right. Here is what he said to do:
1. Remove the black and color cartridges.
2. Place finger in upper left hand corner of print head case and gently slide it down. That is when I lost the call, but as I did that the print head case easily slipped out.
I reinstalled it, put the cartridges back in, closed the printer and, voila, the calibration sequence started.
The tech guy took my number "in case we got disconnected," so he could call me back, but so far he didn't call back. Nevertheless, my printer's working. Next step is to hook it up to my computer.
Hope this helps someone.
The best solution for this problem? Buy a Hp, Lexmark or anything besides a Kodak Easyshare.
I had the same problem since I got mine 2 days ago. I think the secret is to be gentle when putting in the cartridges so as to not disrupt the printhead. You must be firm when installing the printhead but It seems like the printhead will lose its seal if you press to hard when putting in the ink. Of course you have to press hard enough to make everything "click" in place like the instructions say.
We had the same problem from the 1st day! Finally I took out the cartridges, rapped them smartly a time or two, said four letter words at them and replaced them. They now show up as full and the blinky red lights went away. Don't know how long this will last...
We had the same problem and tried all steps Customer Service suggested each time; after several calls, it was determined we had a defective printhead... Kodak sent a new printhead, new ink cartridges w/ an envelope to return the ones I was using.
Apparently it's a common problem with this model; especially the earlier ones. Have had NO problems since the printhead was replaced.
I would suggest if you have recurring problems (even after Customer Service directives), call and ask if you might have a defective printhead.

Kodak 5100 :
does not print red ???
I have the All-in-One Kodak 5100 photo printer and straight out of the box gave me the 'Check Ink' flashing red lights for both black and color inks. I have removed them several times and reinserted. (Even tried the 'smartly tapping' to no avail). Made sure the permanent printhead was securely in place...can't seem to remove it now to try and re-seat it...I'm very dissatisfied with it being a Kodak product. I think I'll leave Kodak to their cameras and take this garbage printer back and buy a new HP printer...have always had good results with my HP printers. I upgraded to Vista and my older HP All-in-One did not have any driver support for Vista, wanted to give another name-brand printer a try, that was Vista compatible. Should have stuck with the tried-and-true HP printer products.
Just began installing new printer. Both cartridge lights blinking and unable to calibrate printer. Have turned printer on and off several times, removed ink cartridges and reinstalled. Tried accessing Kodak online support but everytime I try, the pages flashes for a second and then I'm kicked out.
I Have the same problem and my computer is also telling me the printerhead is not installed and it is.
We are having problems with our 5100 printer recognising the color ink cartridge. We had this problem not long after buying the printer and they sent us a new printhead. Kodak support went through a few exercises with me, but to no avail. So they are sending me another printhead!!!!!!! Should I just go back to HP?
