How to make my tv screen smaller with my universal remote
You can buy a new exact replacement of your remote control for $9.95 at Amazon.com. The product name is

The remote control has a "Pix Shape" button. Pressing this button will change the picture shape and size. This may the only adjustment you need to make. There's also a "Reset" button on the remote control. If you press the Reset button twice it will restore the original factory settings on the TV. But beware that any preference settings you have made for picture or sound or other things will be lost and you'll have to redo them after using the Reset option.

Further discussion:
You said the picture is too large for the screen. Most TVs do have the picture very slightly enlarged so that you don't see flickering dots or lines around the edge of the picture. This practice is known as "overscan" and you're only losing about 2% of the picture, not enough to notice.
However, if the picture on your TV is WAY too large there are several possible causes. One cause may be that a "Zoom" or "Wide" option has been selected on the remote control. Another cause may be that the "Aspect ratio" (also called Pix Shape) option has been set incorrectly. Another cause may be that the TV is getting its picture from a cable TV set top box or DVR, and the Zoom or Aspect ratio control on the set top box or DVR has been set incorrectly.
