Hello,
If you're iPhone is having calling issues, there are a few things to check.
1. Make sure you're within your provider's coverage area. This is the #1 issue that affects many iPhones. Also, large metropolitan areas (like New York or San Francisco, for example) have such heavy iPhone use that the carrier's services can be affected by too many users.
2. Try rebooting the iPhone, this sometimes resets everything and gets the signal back.
3. Double-check the Settings and verify that you do not have Airplane mode enabled. Airplane mode effectively blocks all radio transmission (Edge/3g/Wifi/Bluetooth) until disabled.
4. Have you recently upgraded your iPhone's firmware OS? If so, might be the cause. Try updating it again by connecting it to your computer, opening iTunes and clicking on the Restore button. This might reinstall a necessary driver for your iPhone to function properly.
5. Is your iPhone jailbroken/unlocked? If so, this too can have serious affects on your calling ability. Especially unlocking as your baseband (the software used by the modem which communicates to/from) is modified for use by Non-AT&T carriers. If this happened after a jailbreak/unlock, I would recommend restoring the firmware OS by following the steps in solution #4 and then retry jailbreaking/unlocking the iPhone with Blackra1n.
6. Depending on the age of your iPhone, there may be a faulty logic board or modem. If this is the case, the iPhone will need servicing by Apple or a replacement by AT&T (if under warranty).

As far as I can tell, this is not a network issue. I have come to this realization slowly as my reaction was to blame AT&T since I have had issues with them on other phones and the arguments about the iPhone clogging up their network seemed to make sense. But after trying a bunch of suggestions by the AT&T folks including replacing my sim card, I have had no luck. Researching this issue a bit further, it appears to be a global issue with iPhone users from other countries having similar problems. Also, I carry a Blackberry for work and 9 times out of 10 or better, I can make a call on the BB when I cannot on the iPhone.
Unless worldwide carriers have put the iPhone on a special network that is insufficient for the data mass being used (highly unlikely), I think evidence points to the phone as the issue. Rumors about the 3G iPhone using an antiquated radio chipset for the phone seems plausible to me. I read something about this on some other posts.
Since I have the BB, I generally deal with the network headaches and overall, I have a good experience with most aspects of the iPhone.
I will try keeping the 3G off, but that is kind of a bummer... Like getting a cool car and keeping it in the garage.

SOURCE: Which IPhone 3G Case do you like better?

Based on trying a few iPhone cases, I would look for an iPhone case that:   -  doesn't have a cover flap.  Lifting the flap every time you use the phone gets annoying -  prevents skidding.  The iPhone can easily skid off a table; you can lose it or, worse, break it.   -  has a screen cover that doesn't reflect or refract light in awkward ways -  has a screen cover that doesn't get dirty easily.
Many covers may have these qualities.  One combination I have tried and liked is:   -  the "white gel case" at the AT&T store (about $20) -  the "screen protector tri-pack" also at the AT&T store (about $10)

SOURCE: iPhone 3G keeps saying 'bluetooth unavailable' and 'No Wi-Fi'

If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond

  1. Press and hold the Home button for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
  2. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

More resets:
Try This:
1. Remove Sim Card
2. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until Apple logo appears
3. Replace Sim Card
4. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until normal phone screen appears.

Also, Try this:
1.) Shut down the iPhone 3G.
2.) Start up iTunes
3.) Hold down HOME button on the iPhone 3G
4.) While keeping the HOME button depressed, plug in the Sync cable
5.) A message will pop up to ask if you want to reset.
6.) Just click YES and the reset process should start.

You need to disable 3G and VPN. To do so, go to Settings> General> Network. Make sure the "Enable 3G" option is turned off. Next, tap VPN at the bottom of the screen and make sure to turn it off too.
If the 3G and VPN are turned "ON", your iPhone will try to connect to the internet everytime it catches signal, normally this happens coz of Mail app and others that require internet connection.

The bluetooth device in the car must be put into "search" mode. it is different with different devices but it needs to make itself discoverable. This keeps just anyone from picking up your bluetooth signal while you drive down the road.
