Yes, all products that you buy have to be "fit for use". The 3 R's apply, repair, replace or refund. Under consumer rights law, they have to do this. Make sure you bring all packaging and receipts with you and speak to the shop manager. If you get no joy (they have to, by law, help you) report it to head office.
You got it as a gift ... it doesnt work ... they are offering 50% refund for a product that is broken ... how do they know you didnt break it? Take the $ and run. Be glad you have friends with good taste to give you a nice gift ... that sadly, doesn't work.
