My optio t10 did basically the same thing...turned on, lens goes out, then automatically shut off. I took the advice of a solution listed here for another problem...hit the camera. For whatever reason it worked.

I had the same problem with the exact same camera (Pentax Optio S5Z) that happened the same way. I searched everywhere on the web and finally found this post that didn't have a solid solution. So I started experimenting with different button combinations and finally figured it out.

Hold the OK button while turning on the camera. The screen should indicate that it is in audio record mode. Now press the Menu button and use the navigation keys to find and execute the system reset option.

After turning it off and back on it should function normally.

i got it!!! on my cam i hold down the menu button at the same time power on, it will showup a " ver 1.00" and lens move a little maybe u have to do it 2 times but second time it should work

How do you delete the photo that shows up on the start up/welcome screen?
Sometimes they (the manufactures) pack to much stuff in these cameras. Also I thought it simpler if I just did a screen shot so you could read it from the manual as I'm sure I wouldn't be able to explain this sequence well enough. What it looks like to me though is you can take a picture of something you want and use that picture as your start up screen. It also tells me you can change this when you want. Her is a link to a PDF manual for your camera.

The LCD screen on my Pentax Optio a20 does not work, but the camera takes good pictures. Where can I send it for repair?
Pentax in Arizona will replace the screen for $90, or I will replace it for $40. I can fix it in one day, and mail it the next. Faster than Pentax! contact me: mrfixitmark at comcast dot net

You can also buy a screen on eBay for about $25-$30 shipped, and do it yourself, but you'll need VERY small screwdrivers (jewelers) and will have to deal with VERY small parts, and delicate connections.

Camera doing its own thing.
Depending on the age and use of the batteries it could well be time to replace them. The best test would be to buy a new set of high power alkalkine batteries which you know to be fresh and try them. If everything works then invest in a new set of rechargeables. A respected brand with a high milliamp rating is best. It is possible one of your rechargables has lost the will to live and just died don't add just one battery. Change the complete set.

I've repaired a number of Pentax cameras where everything was OK except for the batteries.

Pentax Optio A40 - takes pictures but cannot see them on the screen. There is no viewer window so difficult to see if a picture is taken
If you are saying that the screen never works, then it is simply a broken LCD screen. I can replace the screen for $40, or you can buy the parts on eBay for about $25 and do it yourself if you are very handy, and very skilled with small delicate parts. You could send it to Pentax in Arizona, but they charge about $90 for an LCD replacement. If you just want to get rid of this camera, I also buy all Pentax Option a10, a20, a30, a40 cameras. PENTAX Optio 60
If properly captured pictures can be played back fine ( quality is ok ) but images look 'noisy' i.e. color and resolution not what it should be then your camera has a faulty CCD sensor. Ask Pentax if they do this model with this problem free of charge ( most manufacturers repair CCD problems free of charge ).

Pentax Optio 555 LCD screen blank problem
No I don't believe it is your shutter, more than likely it is a LCD Screen problem. I would suggest you take your camera back to the shop where you purchased the camera and have it serviced under warranty. I had a customer with an Optio 550 come in and it looked like every shot was taken through 'venetian blinds' and the problem was with the LCD Screen and the camera was sent back to Pentax and repaired under warranty.
