The set is probably in the wrong display format for the channels you are watching. Look through the setup menus for "Display format" or "Display mode". You need the menu that sets the picture for "480i", "720p", "1080p", etc. Set it for 1080p and see if that fixes it. The lower settings won't show all of the lines for a 1080p picture; they are used for old-style analog video or low-bandwidth broadcasts.

Just called Sony about this same problem...taking your CABLE BOX remote, push the # key on the bottom right of the remote (it also says HD Zoom on mine). You can cycle through 4 or 5 zoom options...make sure you are on an HD channel to see the changes. :)
Look up your user manual, it sounds like your zoom feature has been activated to the max. I have a Zenith backlit LCD TV and it has a zoom feature you control from your remote. You could open up your on screen menu and find the place to reset the TV to factory settings that should clear up the problem.
On your remote control you should see a zoom or picture size button. Try changing this back to 16:9. I expect that your screen got zoomed either on purpose or by accident by someone. Some people zoom in the picture to eliminate the aspect ratio areas at the top and bottom and/or sides.
This should be your problem, just un-zoom the picture
Normallly, if the picture size button on the remote for the television does not achieve the desired affect, then, a cable box or a satelite box is where the change needs to be made. For example: Some Motorola Cable receivers need to be set up in the menu to go to a wide screen or zoom mode when an analog signal is detected. There may be a format button on the remote. Some Dish Network boxes have Size buttons on their remotes and also in their main menu. It's difficult to determine the repair without knowing the types of the peripherals. Hope this helps.
