The problem you are having usually stems from someone having opened the dishwasher door before the machine had completed its cycles. This messes up future cycles, causes lights to flash, and the electronic controls get confused as to what processes have actually been completed or not, so allows for just about anything to happen next, including unwanted restarts. Such restart puts water into the machine, which can only be emptied using the Cancel/drain button, and if that cycle is interrupted by opening the door then the problem is further compounded. Unplugging and replugging the AC power cord, or Replacing the electronic control unit, won't solve the issue. If you push the Cancel/drain button, and allow that drain operation to fully complete, before attempting to start each new wash cycle, the problem will eventually disappear. If the pump keeps running more than two minutes after you no longer hear water emptying into the drain pipe, you should press Cancel to stop the pump. If any panel lights remain on, or start flashing, press Cancel button until none are seen. If the Steam/Sanitize panel light is on, you may need to press that button before you can press Cancel.
