Try it on another computer to see if the issue still happens.
-If you have a printer that is compatible with the camera try that too. (Ref user guide page 62. Second ref link)

If the issue still happens use another USB cable.

If the issue still happens with a another USB cable then the USB port on the camera may be no longer working.

The coolpix cable has a usb on one end and the other is nikon specific connection. you will need to buy a cable for a usb/nikon connection.

go to the nikon website and update the drivers for the camera and go to hp and update your OS

That is the only Nikon software that supports Vista since your camera is "outdated".

However, the camera's transfer button can not be used to transfer pictures over a PTP connection. Set the USB transfer option to Mass storage to enable the camera's transfer button.
