The washer will fill, drain and spin, but not agitate. It seems to be running through the wash cycle slower than normal and seems to sit in this cycle for three times longer than usual. Is this something I can fix myself?

Hi Norm. Welcome to FixYa.
The first thing to check with the kind of symptoms your machine exhibits is the operation of the lid switch. Make sure that the pin/plunger on the lid itself has not broken off, and check the actuator lever on the switch itself. It is REALLY common on your model for the actuator arm to break off or crack, and this will cause no spin/no pump problems. Your machine is built by Whirlpool and the part number for the switch assembly is a 3849238. You can get it at any local whirlpool parts center in your area.
I hope you find this info helpful and thank you for allowing us to serve you.
Happy New Year from the FixYa crew!

you probably have a bad or burnt contact in the timer. it could have had bugs get into it during the storage. it does happen. a new timer could cost 120-150 bucks and i dont think you will have much luck with an over 20 year old washer. if you did replace the timer then what would be the next thing to fail?
save your money and go out and buy a new roper or whirlpool built unit. roper is the cheaper version from whirlpool and has the exact same parts.
you can find a new unit for about 275-300 bucks. it will be a much better choice for you in the long run.

top loader ??? or front loader??? if top loader you have broken your lid switch, will fill, agitate, but when it comes to drain/spin for safety reasons if the unit doent recognize the lid closed it will not advance...if yo have a front loader then i would suspect that something has gotten into the pump assy and preventing drainiing of water therefore will not spin
