Their is a rod that runs from inside handle to a lever that pulls up on the latch mechanism. The outside handle has a rod that runs to the same place, what I have seen is the rod running from lever to mechanism come loose at the mechanism and neither handle will work.
It might be the Shifter Lock - Unlock switch. Use the following to check: Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brake lights and/or shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Is the brake pedal coming all the way back up? Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuses and the bulbs. Is shifter fully in Park? Also try jiggling the turn signal lever. Make sure the return spring on brake pedal works properly holding pedal up firmly. It could be "jiggling" while you drive.

There could be a problem with the turn signal lever switch. Power is routed thru the switch to the tail / brake lamps. Also in this power "loop" is the brake light switch, try the following:

You didn't mention if the inside release works. Typically there are little rods and levers involved and something comes loose. If you find a rod off, do something, as it will want to pop off again, only sooner. Sometimes you find broken plactic and you need to get a new part.
It is annoying to get into the door if neither inside or outside will release the door.
Some doors are affected by pulling on a lever, near the time unlock button was pushed... If lock, and unlock )with no levers being pulled (by you)) does not release it, surgery is next step.
I had the same problem and the solution is this: There is a red lever switch by the power chord on the scanner/printer. Above this red lever switch is the drawing of a lock in the "locked" position and at the bottom this red lever switch is the drawing of a lock in the "opened (unlock)" position. The lever on the red switch should point to the "opened" lock symbol (unlock). It the switch lever is pointing to the "locked" position of the lock symbol, flip it to the "opened" position and recycle power on the scanner by removing the power chord for a 30 seconds. If the lever is pointing to the "unlock" lock symbol, flip it to the "locked" position and then back to the "unlocked" position and recycle power. Good luck!
