This also happens to my vga connection to my TV. I used my tv remote "auto" button to re-size it to fit correctly. If your monitor/TV does not have the adjustment, you may need to supply your vga compatible device with your monitor's driver software. This tells your computer what monitor specifications you have.
ur setting may be set to low resolution...
try doing this
go to Desktop/right click/properties/Settings/Screen Resolution/
What do u c...what's the resolution there...800x600...
if the slider(pointer) is active use it to increase it to say 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x1024 etc.
use the correct resolution....as too much of resolution will make ur monitor un-viewable...
also try if ur monitor has some press button on them to make changes to the correct setting/zooming of the screen image...
there are 2 possibilities
1. you have changed screen resolution by accident, try using that [right click desktop and properties, look in tabs there]
or
2.
your screen is old and it has "burned out" in some parts
There are usually controls, button or knobs, to "Stretch" "Move" "Pincusion" and others... have you tried this, as this is what it "Sounds" like to me from ya description? If there are NO controls on the front to accomplish this task, at the REAR of the unit there should be controls marked to show the function. Below is a link where ya will find a Manual that may help ya.

Depending on the application you are viewing the picture in you can shrink the application window. You could reduce the size of the viewable area but that defeats the purpose of the wide screen which is to provide a better viewing experience (to quote the marketing types). It sounds like....since the wider screen really has nothing to do with your picture size....you might want to adjust your picture size independent of screens and applications. There are a variety of free products out there that can do this...and some are really nifty...perhaps better than the software you might now be using.
