The reverse lever operates from a cam in the machine and from forward to reverse in the stitch direction means that the stitch length will vary as the lever is moved from full operation to top of cam ( no direction movement) to over center of cam to progressively get longer in the opposite direction
there should be a locking method on the lever or the movement of the lever should have a resistance ( notches or indents for stitch length positions, singer have a graduated notches, bernina have a ***** knob on the leber )
Basically unless you have a need for a particular stitch length, just move the lever from full forward to full reverse ( which ever you are using at the time ) and the stitch length will always be the same
go google and type in-- workshop manual for juki model ddl-8500-7 sewing machine ---and see if there is a pdf version for down load.
of the sites there may be a user manual as well in pdf version
Testimonial: "Mahalo Bill! Interesting you mention "full forward or Full reverse." I have been using the small metal lever lately and the larger lever under the stitch length knob. This just started happening a couple of days ago. I was also told that there needs to some type of adjustment internally. I do small manufacturing and normally use 2.5 or 2.75 stitch length."
