Re: How much oil does the engine take for an oil change
Briggs & Stratton engines typically take 48 ounces of SAE 30 oil.
Kohler engines typically take 64 ounces (2 quarts) of 10w30 oil.
Always refer to the dipstick to ensure proper amount is added and do not over fill.

Did you have the oil changed lately ?
Oil Life Left
Oil life left percentage is based on the information the DIC receives from a class 2 message from the PCM. The DIC displays the current percentage of the GM Oil Life System. When the oil needs changing the change engine oil indicator in the message center turns ON. When the engine oil is changed, reset the oil life left. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting in Maintenance and Lubrication.
GM Oil Life System Resetting
When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL message will come on. Change the engine oil as soon as possible within the next 600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if driving under the best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that an oil change is necessary for over a year. However, the engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset.
If the system is ever reset accidentally, change the engine oil at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since last oil change.
How to Reset the Engine Oil Life System
If the vehicle does not have optional Driver Information Center (DIC) , do the following:
Turn the ignition to ON, with the engine off.
Fully press and release the accelerator pedal slowly three times within five seconds.
Turn the key to OFF. If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on when you start the vehicle, the Engine Oil Life System has not reset. Repeat the procedure.
If the vehicle has the optional DIC, do the following:
Turn the ignition to ON, with the engine off.
Press the MODE button until the DIC reads OIL LIFE LEFT/HOLD SET TO RESET.
Press and hold the SET button until 100 percent is displayed. You will hear three chimes and the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message will go off.
Turn the key to OFF.
If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on when you start the vehicle the Engine Oil Life System has not reset. Repeat the procedure.
Oil Life Monitor Resetting (KD, KE)
Description
The engine oil life monitor will indicate when to change the engine oil and the engine oil filter - usually between 5 000 km (3,000 miles) and 12 500 km (7,500 miles) since the last oil change. Under severe conditions, the CHANGE OIL message may be displayed before 5 000 km (3,000 miles). The vehicle must not be driven more than 12 500 km (7,500 miles) or 12 months without an oil change.
The engine oil life monitor will not detect dust in the oil. If the vehicle is driven in a dusty area, be sure to change the oil every 5 000 km (3,000 miles) or sooner if the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message is displayed.
Reset the oil life monitor when the oil has been changed.
Resetting Procedure
Press the INFORMATION SKIP button on the DIC control panel in order to display the OIL LIFE LEFT message.
Press and hold the RESET NO button until the display shows 100% ENGINE OIL LIFE.
How to Reset the Engine Oil Life System The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change the engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Whenever the oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs where the oil is changed prior to a CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message being turned on, reset the system. Always reset the engine oil life to 100% after every oil change. It will not reset itself. To reset the Engine Oil Life System: Display the OIL LIFE REMAINING on the DIC. Press and hold the SET/RESET button on the DIC for more than five seconds. The oil life will change to 100%. If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message comes back on when the vehicle is started, the Engine Oil Life System has not reset. Repeat the procedure.
Good luck and thanks for your question and I hope my suggestions help. burdfrenzy

on a 2001 gm i believe you turn the ingition to the run position with the engine off and with-in 3 seconds step on gas pedal 3 times all the way to the floor. the message center should reset and go off. turn key off and then start car. to see if reset.sometimes you have to go slow 3 times to floor with gas pedal.MAKE SURE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING WHEN YOU DO THE RESET.
Using the black push button/rod, you know the one where you can switch to see trip A trip B etc?
keep pushing it til you get to the check engine part then it will cycle
through several things. when you find the right place it will read "if
new oil hold reset" at this point just hold reset. That is the black
push button/rod.
If this don't work, try it again, sometimes it may miss...
HOW TO RESET THE ENGINE OIL LIFE
SYSTEM The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change your engine
oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime your oil is changed, reset the
system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation
occurs where you change your oil prior to a "CHANGE ENGINE OIL" message being
turned on, reset the system.
With the ignition key in "RUN" but the engine off, repeatedly push the
trip/reset button until "OIL" is displayed on the Driver Information Center
(DIC).
Once "OIL" is displayed, push and hold the trip/reset button for five
seconds. The number will disappear and be replaced by 100 (indicating 100% oil
life remaining).
Turn the key to "OFF". If the "CHANGE ENGINE OIL" message comes back on when
you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the
procedure.
If this does not work you may have a problem with your instrument cluster.
the Change Engine Oil message is diplayed in the driver information center when the oil change is due ,,,,, to RESET display message , press the INFO button to display the ENGINE OIL LIFE message , ,, Press and Hold the RESET button untill 100% ENGINE OIL LIFE is displayed.
